The Hawks by SD Hendrickson

The Hawks: A Novel by [Hendrickson, SD]5 Stars

This was such a good read for me. I didn’t want to put it down, so I didn’t.  It’s been awhile since I’ve seen a book from SD Hendrickson and it was a pleasure to lose myself in it.

The Hawks goes back and forth between two timelines. One that is progressing over weeks/months and another that is over mere hours. One timeline holds the mystery, the other holds the romance, when the two converge it makes it nearly impossible to put down. I will admit, there were parts of the story that left me in tears. There were times when things seemed hopeless. There was devastation. But at the end of it all, there is love and hope and a future that is different than planned.

I loved Javier and I grew to love Cole. If Cole got his own book that would be an auto-buy for me. I can’t wait to see if my wish comes true, but whatever she writes next… I’ll be reading it.

I received an advance reader copy of this book that I have chosen to review.

“Sultry
summer of suspense that leads to the fall of a powerful family”
He warned
me. Said hawks were dangerous birds. Their majestic beauty could blind your
eyes as they picked the flesh from your bones. But even hawks have enemies. And
they eventually came for the Hawthorn family. Held us hostage. Demanded
retribution.
But I
wasn’t a Hawthorn. No, I was just the help. Caught in the turmoil of a tragic
family. I worked hard for Delsey Hawthorn. Tried to earn the respect of the
reigning tyrant. Assistant. Event planner. Gardner. Chauffeur. I added it all
to my resume.
And then I
met Javier Hawthorn. Delsey ordered me to stay away from her grandson. But like
a moth to a burning flame, I gravitated toward him. He was so different than my
world. Irresistible. Charming. He brought a calmness to the chaos.
But that
was before the intruders came into the house. Tied us up. Hurt us. We struggled
to get away. We fought to survive. But who were the men behind the masks? Did
we know them? Because someone who got this close to the family at night must be
even closer during the day.

Excerpt
“I’m sorry. I wasn’t trying to upset you.” My hands cupped his cheeks. I peered into his eyes, trying to read him better as I wore my heart on the outside. “I know this is supposed to be casual. But this doesn’t feel casual to me. You are so good to me. So much more than I ever expected. The way you make me feel. I just need to know if you feel the same way. And it’s okay if you don’t. I just need to know the truth.”

Javier rested his forehead against mine. “I feel the same, Sarina.”

“You do?” The elation filled my chest and I leaned up to kiss him, but his words stopped me.

“I feel the same, but you’re not really mine. Not permanently. What right do I have to feel jealous or angry?”

“But you have every right,” I pleaded with him. “If you think we’re together.”

The emotions shifted in his eyes as he struggled with his answer. “Maybe I tried to pretend at first. That you could mean nothing. But I couldn’t. I care about you, Sarina. And in another time or place, I could see myself wanting so much more with you. But the more we feel, the harder it ends.”

“You don’t think I know that?” I whispered. “I know you will hurt me. Eventually.”

“But I don’t want to hurt you. So I have to ask you this. Do you want to stop now before this gets more serious? Before it hurts more?”

“No,” I gushed. I didn’t even hesitate. The idea of him pulling away sent a panic through me. I didn’t care about the heartbreak that would come later when he left me. I needed him in my life right now. “I don’t want to stop seeing you.”

Havoc by Laramie Briscoe (Moonshine Task Force #3)

 4 Stars

Havoc is the 3rd book of the Moonshine Task Force, and the best one yet! The relationship between Havoc & Leighton has been teased since the beginning, with the huge reveal in the last book that they were getting married seemingly out of the blue. In Havoc, we find out that their marriage is actually a “marriage of convenience” so that Holden can protect Leighton from her violent outlaw father.

The sexual tension between these two is great, and while their marriage looks normal from the outside, only these two know that behind closed doors they have been keeping a friendly, but platonic relationship. I really enjoyed watching Leighton and Havoc’s relationship grow and evolve into something “more”. I’m a sucker for protective, Alpha men, and Havoc delivers plus promises more with the next book, Ace.

When a marriage of convenience turns into the passion of a
lifetime…
Holden “Havoc” Thompson

My job as the leader of the Moonshine Task Force is my life. I eat, breathe,
and sleep it. The men under my command mean the world to me. Knowing they count
on my guidance has kept my demons at bay for longer than I care to admit.

The control I have over myself is an iron fist that sometimes threatens to
squeeze the life out of me. What I want more than anything is to live again –
let go of the hurt smothering every bit of light I have in this darkness.

I don’t expect it to come in the form of a Moonshiner’s daughter needing my
protection.

Leighton Strather

My whole life has been defined by who my family is. In the state of Alabama,
we’re number one with a target on our backs. The danger and prestige isn’t for
me. I don’t care about the money, and I care too much about the families we’ve
ruined.

My brother and my dad are proud of it. They wear their arrest records like a
badge of honor. Me? I want as far away from the lifestyle as I can get.

It’s the only reason I ask Holden to marry me. At least that’s
what I tell myself.

I never expect his whispered yes to cause such upheaval in my life. Even though
I resist, I learn some havoc is good – and this one? It’s a whirlwind of lust,
hope, and love and all I can do is let it sweep me away.

Tied by Carian Cole (Devils Wolves #2)

5 Stars

Tied by Carian Cole is the second book in her Devils Wolves series. This is a series of standalones with interconnecting characters. The characters from the last book were mentioned, but didn’t really play a big role so you don’t feel like you are missing something if you didn’t read the first book. But you should totally read the first book too. Really.

As for TiedI read this in one sitting. I picked it up just intending to start it before bed and then before I knew it, it was 4AM and I was putting my Kindle down with a satisfied smile on my face. This story is unique and I completely loved it. Both characters are coming from a dark place. They are scarred both mentally and physically from the traumas of their pasts. They come together and there is healing.

I’ve only read 3 of Carian Cole’s books, but I’ve discovered I’m a really big fan. All 3 books have received a 5 Star rating from me. So now, I’m slowly catching up on her earlier works. It’s taking me awhile, but I’ll eventually get there.

Falling Hard by Lexi Ryan (The Blackhawk Boys #4)

4.5 Stars

Once I’m invested in a series, I no longer read the blurbs. I prefer to go in blind and just trust the author. What a shock for me when I started this one, and EMMA IS NOT OLIVIA! Part of me was relieved because Olivia grinds my nerves like no other, but I was also disappointed because I knew Keegan wanted his family together.

There was no need to be disappointed, Emma is a doll and I loved her with Keegan. Keegan has matured so much since becoming a father and it shows. They had a brief but intense relationship when they were younger. They both have heartbreaking secrets from “before” that affected their relationship both then and now.

All the previous couples make a quick appearance in this one, but it is completely standalone. Lexi Ryan wrote this well, and you won’t feel like you are missing anything if you haven’t read the other books yet. That teaser for the next book though?!?!?!?!? I NEED IT NOW.

An NFL player with a secret past, and the one woman with the power to turn his world inside out…
Former actress Emma Rothschild is partying in Vegas in disguise. But I’m not fooled. Five years ago, I knew that body better than my own, and I haven’t forgotten a single detail—not the curve of her hip beneath my hand or the hitch in her breath when I kiss her neck.
When Emma’s unexpectedly left alone in Sin City, I agree to spend the weekend with her. As friends. Why not? If I can knock down the toughest guys in the NFL, I’m strong enough to keep my hands to myself, even if she is the sexiest woman I’ve ever met.
Emma is part of my past—years so shrouded in secrets that not even my best friends know the truth about who I am. I’m a single dad now and not interested in revisiting my old ways or trying to win back the only woman I ever let close enough to break my heart.
But this is Vegas, where all bets are off, and with Emma, nothing ever goes as planned…

Excerpt

“You’re too beautiful,” I tell her. I run my thumb along her jaw. “Too fucking beautiful.”“I’ve missed you. You’re the best man I’ve ever met.”

My stomach clenches and I shake my head. “Don’t think that. It’s a lie. It’s what I wanted you to believe. Don’t bring that lie into tonight.”

“How was it a lie?” She grins up at me, and I know a full confession would erase all the happiness from her face.

“When we were together before, I wasn’t the man you thought I was. I wasn’t good.” It’s the closest to the truth I’ve ever given anyone about my past.

“So you don’t want me believing you’re good?”

I pull her hips tightly against me as I exhale in frustration. She still thinks this is some kind of joke. “I’m different now, but then…”

She lifts onto her toes and flicks her tongue against my ear. “Don’t be so different. I like you a little bad.”

I groan and stop dancing. I don’t know how much longer I can do this without diving over the line. “Is that permission to stop being your friend?” I’m obsessed with knowing if she tastes as sweet as I remember. And if I swipe my tongue over the sensitive spot beneath her ear, will she gasp like she always did?

She shrugs and grins, and the dance floor tilts off balance. It’s crowded, and we’re surrounded by writhing bodies, cocooned in the crowd. I turn her in my arms so her back is to my front and settle my hand against the soft skin of her midriff. She arches her back and rubs against me.

I sweep her hair to the side, and when I press my lips to the long, smooth column of her neck, she trembles against me.

“Are you okay?” I ask against her ear. “Is this okay?”

“I—I’m not sure…”

“Tell me what you want. Not five years ago. Not tomorrow. What do you want right now?”

She reaches back and threads her fingers through my hair to guide my mouth back to her neck.

I don’t hesitate. I kiss and suck on that tender skin while we move to the beat.

The rest of the room fades and one song blurs into the next. A waitress comes by selling shots, and I buy two, one for each of us, and we lock eyes as we throw them back. At some point, I’m vaguely aware of Bailey checking on me, but my focus is one hundred percent on Emma, on this night that takes me back to when I was eighteen and so fucking in love it hurt. Tonight, Emma isn’t the woman who once broke my heart. She isn’t the girl who wrote me off with a simple goodbye note and apologies I didn’t want. Tonight, she’s a dream, my fantasy in the flesh, my reward for surviving the hardest year of my whole life.

When her face begins to blur, I realize I’m way more drunk than I ever intended. I need to sober up or I’m not going to remember a minute of this night. “Want to get out of here?”

She nods, takes my hand, and leads me out of the bar and down the hall to the elevators. My watch reads a quarter past two.

“Let’s get some food,” I suggest, but at the same moment, an elevator dings and the doors slide open.

Emma grabs my hand and drags me inside. “I don’t want food,” she says, punching a button.

I spin her around and press her against the wall. “What do you want, Em?” I drop my hand to her side to skim my knuckles over her skirt, and she widens her stance to part her thighs. “Fuck,” I whisper. I shouldn’t do this. Not here, not when any moment someone could join us on the elevator, not when we’re both so damn drunk it’s a wonder we can stand upright. But shouldn’t is so much weaker than want, and I want to touch her more than I want anything right now.

I’m faintly aware of the soft beeping of the passing floors as I slide my hand up her skirt and cup her between her legs. She gasps, and I rub my fingers over the damp lace of her panties, teasing her swollen flesh.

When the elevator stops and the doors slide open, she grabs my wrist and holds me still. “Please,” she whispers in my ear. “Please. Don’t stop.” Then she tilts her hips and rocks against my hand. I couldn’t refuse her if every person in the hotel was watching us.

Ends Here by M. Robinson (Road to Nowhere #2)

5 Stars!

What a roller coaster! I literally could not put these books down. I finished Road to Nowhere at 2AM and then immediately started Ends Here. I was finally able to set my Kindle down 2 hours later and get some sleep before diving right back in the next night.

This is in no way a standalone, and reading Road to Nowhere first is required. You will cry, you will be angry, you will be frustrated. This is an amazing love story, but you have to get through the love triangle first. It’s an impossible choice. You know someone’s going to get hurt no matter what happens, but you still want everyone to get their happily ever after.

Ends Here was released today, so get started on this duet ASAP.

Road to Nowhere by M. Robinson (Road to Nowhere #1)

5 Stars

I don’t have a lot of experience with M. Robinson. The first book I read from her was Crave Me last year. That book emotionally devastated me. She is a gifted writer, and has the ability to wring any emotion she would like out of you. After reading that book, I wanted to read the rest of The Good Ol’ Boys series but couldn’t make myself hop on the emotional roller coaster that I knew would come.

I decided to try her out again with this duet. I’m glad I did. After reading this, I think I’m ready to tackle the rest of her books. There are many characters in her books and it seems most of them get their “own” book. You don’t need to have read any of her other books to enjoy this one, but you might feel like you are missing a bit of something.

There is a definite cliffhanger at the end of this book. It isn’t one where you will feel like you can live without knowing what happens. I finished Road to Nowhere at 2AM and immediately dove into Ends Here. I was finally able to put the book down 2 hours later. Yes, I needed a nap the next day.

The Heartbeat Hypothesis by Lindsey Frydman

3.5 Stars

Could you love someone that had your dead sibling’s heart in them? I don’t think I could, so when I read the blurb for The Heartbeat Hypothesis, I HAD to read it. This book drew me in from the first chapter and despite the way they met, I expected this to be a lighthearted romance. I was right…. kind of. At the beginning this was a mostly lighthearted book, and I enjoyed it best during the 1st half.

Right before the 50% mark, this book broke my heart. I was teary eyed and frustrated. Why did that have to happen?! I wanted this book to be all rainbows and butterflies with a few perfect photos thrown in. A heartbreaking mystery was thrown in the mix, and the mystery never actually got solved. That bummed me out even more. I like resolution, and while you get it in some ways…. you don’t get it in others. I know, I know. Clear as mud, but if I say anything more then it is a definite spoiler.

Negativity aside, I actually enjoyed this book, and considering it is a debut novel I will definitely be checking out more of her work in the future.
