On the DL by Laramie Briscoe (The MVP Duet #1)

On the DL (The MVP Duet Book 1) by [Briscoe, Laramie]4 Stars

On the DL is the first book in Laramie Briscoe’s new duet, The MVP Duet. It releases today and ends on a cliffhanger, but fortunately the second book, MVP, releases in just two weeks. I haven’t seen a release done like this before, and I really like it. So often I read a book and then have to wait a year or longer to find out what happens next. When that happens I always forget some of the important details from the last book, and it takes a while before I get back in the rhythm of the book. I’m so grateful that I won’t have that problem with this one.

High school sweethearts? Second chance romance? Professional sports romance? This book checks off so many of my favorite plots in romances that I think it was almost impossible for me not to swoon while reading it. And Slater was just so gosh darn sweet. I can’t wait to see what happens next for Malone and Slater.

I received an advance reader copy of this book that I have chosen to review.

A
second-chance romance as scorching hot as a baseball diamond in August.
Slater “Savage” Harlow

Winning the MVP award for the Birmingham Bandits last year was the highlight of
my baseball career. It was the culmination of childhood dreams, calculated
adult decisions, sacrifice, and a hell of a lot of focus. Tearing my ACL in
spring training? Not what I expected at all.

Now I’m home, in small town Georgia, rehabbing in the comfort of my own home,
with people I know. I’m connecting with friends I haven’t had time to talk to
in years, spending days at home with my parents, and getting to watch my little
brother play minor league baseball.

What I don’t expect is to see Malone Fulcher walking into Del’s Diner one
morning while having my coffee and egg whites.

She’s old flame, the one who got away, and the woman I compare all others to.

Malone Fulcher

Spending the summer in my hometown wasn’t what I had planned, but it’s what I
need. Recovering from a hard year, both personally and professionally, I need
to reconnect with who I am. When my mom encouraged me to come home and do some
soul searching, I can’t say no.

Memories are all over this small town, from the Baptist Church to the east
field on my parents farm, to the diner. On my second day in town, I decide to
go in, memories be damned.

I lost my breath as soon as I saw “Savage” Harlow sitting alone at a
booth. Our eyes lock, my heart flutters, and my hands shake – all the same way
they did back in high school. But back then we couldn’t make it work. Going our
separate ways to differing colleges, we decided we weren’t meant to be.

A decade later, as soon as our eyes meet, I’m wondering if we were right,
because those green eyes of his do nothing but take me to a past that I can see
being my future.

Author’s Note: This does end in somewhat of a cliffhanger!

Hothead by Stella Rhys (Irresistible #4)

Hothead (Irresistible Book 4) by [Rhys, Stella]4 Stars

It was hot.

After having read 2 of Stelly Rhys’ books previously, I went into this one without even reading the blurb. It took me quite awhile to realize that this was #4 in the Irresistible series. Something I’ve noticed is that you definitely don’t have to read the other books in this series to be able to become thoroughly invested in it. There is no overlying arc that ties everything together. These are couples that are loosely connected so you can jump in anywhere and still have a great read.

Fake fiancé. YES! I absolutely love a marriage/relationship of convenience, and this one was fire! Even better that they had a bit of a love/hate thing going on at the beginning. I loved the banter, they were hot together and I was ecstatic that Evie was getting her romance after seeing how badly she was treated by her long-time boyfriend in the last book, Dirty Deeds.

I received an advance reader copy of this book that I have chosen to review.

He’s the hottest
player in Major League Baseball, the most notorious playboy in all of
Manhattan…
And my fake fiancé
for the next three months.
I was drunk-dialing my ex the night I met him.
Six-three, sexy as sin and so incredibly rude I could smack the asshole
smirk right off his face. Long story short, we got off to a bad start. But when
the tabloids interpret our sparring as Drew Maddox “groveling
with a “mystery brunette,” his agent presents us both a
proposal:
Shacking up as a couple this summer.
It’s an alleged “win-win.” I need to prove to my ex that I’m fine. Drew
needs to prove to his team that he’s stable. Thanks to his on-field brawling
and never-ending lady drama, Drew Maddox has suddenly found himself on the
trade block – which means he needs a fast, easy way to show the team that he’s
settled down.
Hence this fiancé thing.
Our fights are real, our kisses are fake, and thanks to the nonstop
heat between us, I’m starting to mix up all my signs. But whether it’s real or
fake, there’s one thing I do know:
I’m already addicted.

Stella Rhys is an author of contemporary romance and can’t
help but write it hot, steamy and borderline filthy (just kidding, it’s just
flat-out filthy). Writing aside, she lives for coffee, the Knicks, the Yankees

and now lives there with her husband and charmingly entitled fur babies.

Third Base by Stella

3.5 Stars

This is a good friends-to-lovers romance. The blurb gives you a good idea what the book is about and the title is perfect.

I enjoyed Third Base and this was my first experience reading a book by the author duo that makes up Stella (Leddy Harper & Stephie Walls). I’ll definitely pick up more books from them in the future. My only problem with it is Ellie & Coby spent way too much time not together. It made the book seem slow, because you were constantly waiting for them to finally get together. I absolutely loved Gage (my favorite character). I hope that the next story we get out of Stella is the story of his romance with Missy.

First base: kissing.

Second base: above the waist.

Third base: below the waist.

Home run: no explanation needed.Every baseball player knows to keep their eye on the ball and swing for the
fences. Each base counts, but a home run is the goal. No one wants to strike
out. This is true both on and off the field.

Ellie Teller had been my best friend since we were born, and we had a plan—get
out of the tiny Alabama town we’d grown up in and go to college…together. But
even life’s best-laid plans could throw a powerful curveball. Rather than
attend classes, I was now the starting pitcher for a Major League team.

While my game-day stats were impressive, my record with women was less
desirable. I was the professional baseball player who hadn’t been able to make
it past third base since the one and only night I’d played hardball with my
best friend.

But when the bottom of the ninth came to a close on my career, I had to decide
if our friendship was worth more than a few extra innings.

More Than a Memory by Marie James

5 Stars!

You have to love when a book just connects on a deeply personal level. More Than a Memory by Marie James was that book for me. Olivia was heartbreaking but relatable. You know there is something wrong with her relationship with Duncan, but you don’t know what it is at first. You slowly unravel what’s going on as the book goes along. Her emotions are palpable and easy to understand by anyone that has ever been in love.

I could not put this book down. I picked it up at every opportunity because it is one of those love stories that you can’t help but root for. Watching Bryson just “be there” for Olivia was touching and you couldn’t help but fall in love with him. He’s patient and kind but still smoking hot. Because of this, I finished More Than a Memory in less than 24 hours.

I completely hope that Liam & Emerson, as well as, JJ & SLS also get books because I LOVED both couples!! Emerson is such a character that I can’t help but think I would love her in her own book and the “long time coming” romance between JJ & SLS is one of my favorite types of books. So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!

“You’re gorgeous. Even better looking than the day I fell in love with you.”The words are a constant reminder of what true love is. Olivia Dawson’s alarm goes off at the same time every day and she disappears into her room to hear Duncan’s voice, see his face, miss him even more for being untouchable. Olivia loves with her entire heart, and her love for Duncan is unmatched, but there’s something about her new roommate she just can’t seem to ignore—no matter how hard she tries.

“I miss you so much.”

“Can’t be more than I miss you.” The words are a constant reminder of how unavailable Olivia is, and Bryson Daniels isn’t one for competition off the baseball field, but since the moment he knocked on the door to his new apartment and his roommate “Ollie” wasn’t who he expected, he can’t help but consider bending a few of his rules—even if it means heeding to Olivia’s.

“I love you, sweet cheeks. Chat with you later?”

Bryson hears the conversations through the paper thin walls, but there’s a pain inside Olivia he can’t seem to walk away from. He vows to be there for her when the voice on the other side of the computer inevitably breaks her heart, but will he ever be able to compete with someone who’s more than a memory?

EXCERPT

I join him on the couch and wait for the awkward conversation to pop up again. It’s not the first time he’s caught me appreciating his body, and if he keeps living here, it won’t be the last. In my defense, he’s practically half naked and cut like an Olympian. I’d like to meet a heterosexual woman who wouldn’t do a double take at a shirtless Bryson Daniels. I imagine the list would lean toward the geriatric end of the spectrum, or the blind.
“What are you doing?” he chastises as I scoot a sliver of watercress away from my food. “That’s the best part!”
I hold my plate up for him as he stabs the evil vegetable with his fork and pops it into his mouth.
Plush lips, strong jaw, and masculine slashed eyebrows—this man has everything going for him.
I give my head a slight shake and turn my attention back to the TV. He seems relaxed and unfazed by sitting on the couch beside me. I, on the other hand, am full of turmoil. His thigh is touching mine, his shoulder bumps mine every now and then, and my body shakes slightly when he laughs, ever aware of his proximity.
“You seem like a Hermione,” he says as Harry and Ron sit down beside her in the library.
I watch her with sad eyes as she struggles to remain proud and unaffected by the naysayers trying to pull her down. I’m nothing like her. She stands up to those who throw negativity her way. She faces adversity with her head held high. I cower and hide.
“I wish I were as strong as her,” I say, my voice low. “I used to be like her.”
“What changed?” I tilt my head in his direction, finding the softness in his voice matches the compassion in his eyes.
Looking away, I shake my head, trying my best not to let the tears stinging my eyes fall down my cheek.
“Hey,” Bryson says, reaching over and hooking a finger under my chin, “forget I said anything.”
His finger is gone just as fast, and I miss his touch immediately. My appetite gone, I lean forward and place my half eaten plate of food on the coffee table, the idea of hiding away in my room sounding better by the second.
“Nope,” Bryson says. Picking up my plate, he puts it back on my lap and points to the pile of broccoli. “None of that. Only those in the Slytherin house refuse to eat their vegetables. You’re not Slytherin, are you?”
I grin at his silliness. “Hufflepuff all the way.”
I pop a chunk of food in my mouth.“That’s what I thought.”

Game On by Michelle Smith Release Day!

SYNOPSIS

As king of baseball in the small town of Lewis Creek, Eric Perry can have any girl he wants and win every game he plays. But when a fight lands him in jail, he’s only got one more strike before his baseball career is over for good. His only chance for redemption? The girl next door, Bri Johnson.

Bri hasn’t talked to Eric in months- for starters, she’s been too busy dealing with her jerk of an ex-boyfriend, not to mention the fact that Eric’s been preoccupied trying to drink every keg in the country dry. But when he needs a way to stay on the team, she proposes a plan: if he helps her out with community service, he can stay on the team. At first it’s a nightmare-Eric and Bri stopped being friends years ago, surely that was for a good reason, right? But as volunteering turns to bonding over old memories of first kisses under the stars, they start to have trouble remembering what pushed them apart.

In a town as small as Lewis Creek, nothing stays secret for long and their friendship and romance might mean bad news. But in this final, tumultuous spring before graduation, Eric and Bri are about to realize that nobody’s perfect alone, but they might just be perfect together.

Today is release day for Game On by Michelle Smith. This is the 2nd book in the Lewis Creek series, but it is a STANDALONE that definitely doesn’t require the 1st book for you to enjoy it. That being said, I enjoyed it enough that I am planning on going back and reading the 1st book. You can read my original review here.

Game on by Michelle Smith (Lewis Creek #2)

3.5 Stars

This book was adorable. It’s one of those sweet summer romances (though set during the spring) that you make you just want to lounge around and read. It’s the 2nd book in a series, but you don’t have to read the 1st book to understand this one. I think I probably would have enjoyed it more if I had read the 1st one, but this was still completely worth reading on its own. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I am adding the 1st book Play On to my TBR. It won’t be read soon, because I have a mountain to get through, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to love it.

The chemistry between Bri and Eric is a slow, steady build. I love books where the couple are a “childhood friends to more” type of relationship, and this doesn’t disappoint.

“We can be friends who sleep together.” My lips curve into a smirk. “Just not, you know, that way. Think of it like one of our old campouts, except inside. With heat. And a TV.” I pause. “Okay, so it’s really not a campout at all. But you get the point.”

Since I’m planning on going back and reading the 1st book, I’m also hoping, that there will be a 3rd. Becca and Blake are kinda adorable, and I would love to see where that goes…

Game On is being released August 16, 2016 from Bloomsbury Spark.
