Havoc by Laramie Briscoe (Moonshine Task Force #3)

 4 Stars

Havoc is the 3rd book of the Moonshine Task Force, and the best one yet! The relationship between Havoc & Leighton has been teased since the beginning, with the huge reveal in the last book that they were getting married seemingly out of the blue. In Havoc, we find out that their marriage is actually a “marriage of convenience” so that Holden can protect Leighton from her violent outlaw father.

The sexual tension between these two is great, and while their marriage looks normal from the outside, only these two know that behind closed doors they have been keeping a friendly, but platonic relationship. I really enjoyed watching Leighton and Havoc’s relationship grow and evolve into something “more”. I’m a sucker for protective, Alpha men, and Havoc delivers plus promises more with the next book, Ace.

Blurb
When a marriage of convenience turns into the passion of a
lifetime…
Holden “Havoc” Thompson

My job as the leader of the Moonshine Task Force is my life. I eat, breathe,
and sleep it. The men under my command mean the world to me. Knowing they count
on my guidance has kept my demons at bay for longer than I care to admit.

The control I have over myself is an iron fist that sometimes threatens to
squeeze the life out of me. What I want more than anything is to live again –
let go of the hurt smothering every bit of light I have in this darkness.

I don’t expect it to come in the form of a Moonshiner’s daughter needing my
protection.

Leighton Strather

My whole life has been defined by who my family is. In the state of Alabama,
we’re number one with a target on our backs. The danger and prestige isn’t for
me. I don’t care about the money, and I care too much about the families we’ve
ruined.

My brother and my dad are proud of it. They wear their arrest records like a
badge of honor. Me? I want as far away from the lifestyle as I can get.

It’s the only reason I ask Holden to marry me. At least that’s
what I tell myself.

I never expect his whispered yes to cause such upheaval in my life. Even though
I resist, I learn some havoc is good – and this one? It’s a whirlwind of lust,
hope, and love and all I can do is let it sweep me away.

Trashy Foreplay by Gemma James (Trashy Affair #1)

3.5 Stars

I don’t even know what to say about this book. My feelings are so mixed up on it. I have been wanting to read Trashy Foreplay since I found out about it, and even though I’ve never read Gemma James I had really high hopes for it. While I was reading it, I couldn’t stop. I read the entire book in one day because it is a definite page-turner. But then the events at the end + the cliffhanger dampened my feelings on it a bit.

Chemistry and anticipation were the key factors in why I couldn’t tear my eyes from the page. Gemma James created great tension throughout the entirety of the book and I can see why she’s a bestselling author. I’ll probably try more of her work, but I’m not sure if I’ll be finishing the Trashy Affair series.

Blurb:

Never flirt with temptation.
Never lust after what I can’t have.
And never, under any circumstances, screw a married man again.

By the time this story is told, I’ll have failed at all three…

With my heart and reputation in ruins, I can’t afford to make another mistake. Boarding a flight to Seattle is supposed to give me a clean slate, but from the moment Cash Montgomery slides into the seat next to mine, I’m captivated by his steel eyes that see too much. I ache for this stranger in a way I’ve never ached for anyone.

But I didn’t know he was married, and I sure as hell didn’t see the curveball fate had in store. My clean slate in Seattle isn’t so clean after all because my new boss is the man forbidden to me.

And the only man I want.

The only man I’ll do anything for, even if it means breaking the promise I made to myself when I fled my old life in shame.

I wasn’t supposed to fall for a married man, but I did.

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: Though the subject matter deals with cheating, there are no innocent parties here. Book 1 in the Trashy Affair series.

Excerpt:

I go perfectly still as his arm snakes around me from behind. A warm palm flattens against my stomach, and the tips of his fingers inch beneath the waistband of my jeans. Everything south of that tempting hand flares to life, setting off a deep ache I know only he can fix.

Pulling me against his body, he leans down and whispers into my ear. “Watching him touch you is killing me.”

“Knowing you’re married is killing me.”

He curses under his breath. A hint of his woodsy cologne, along with the sweet aroma of bourbon fills my nostrils.

“Have you been drinking?”

“Maybe a little.” He whirls me around until we’re face-to-face, and my heart flutters in my throat as he tightens his arms around me. “Come upstairs with me.”

His proximity riots through me, the heat of his body sizzling all the way to my fucking toes. We fall into a lazy sway, dancing but not quite, and for a crazy second, I consider following him to the VIP area in the loft. As far as I can tell it’s empty unless a stray couple is hiding in the shadows in the very back. I doubt it though. The club is vibrating with restless energy as everyone crowds the first floor in anticipation of the concert.

“Look at me, Jules.”

His words jolt me to awareness, and I realize I’m staring at his chest. I curl my hands into fists at my sides, too tempted to run my palms down that broad expanse hiding underneath cotton. I bet it’s the softest material on the planet, but I won’t find out because I’m not going there.

Nope.

Not. Gonna. Do. It.

Because I have zero control right now, and we’re standing in the middle of a busy club with God-knows-who watching. And if I do touch him…I might not stop.

“Jules,” he murmurs. “Bring those gorgeous eyes up here.”

I lift my chin and dive headfirst into the fire of his gaze. His eyes are a smoldering, liquid steel. “Cash…please…”

“Please what?”

“Don’t make me want to give in. You’re married.” My voice cracks on that ugly word.

“My marriage is a sham.”

“Your marriage is your business.” I grip his arms, intending to push him away. But somewhere along the way, my brain gets its wires crossed, and I end up curling my fingers around his biceps. God, he’s built—solid man through and through.

“I disagree,” he says, dipping his head until our mouths linger a hairsbreadth from each other. “Everything about me is very much your business.”

“W-why?”

“Because I can’t feel this way about you without it being your business.”

Saving Mr. Perfect by Tamara Morgan (Penelope Blue #2)

4 Stars

I seem to have a soft spot for these Penelope Blue books. I’m pretty methodical when it comes to selecting the books I read. I hate it when I get one I don’t like, so I’m very selective. The thing with Stealing Mr. Right, was that it didn’t meet any of my usual book criteria, and I was STILL dying to read it. So I did. And I loved it.

Naturally, I couldn’t wait for Saving Mr. Perfect to come out. I wasn’t disappointed. I was laughing within minutes, and had to put the book down so my husband could sleep. This book is different though. It’s more heartfelt and not as crazy. Don’t read this book for the romance. Read it for the laughs, the banter and a bit of a crazy mystery. Don’t start with Saving Mr. Perfect. Start with Stealing Mr. Right. Relationship growth is a big plotline in this book and you have to understand Penelope’s relationships with people in the first book to see how they’ve changed (and how devastating it is). You can read my original review for Stealing Mr. Right here.

I think people that enjoyed the early Stephanie Plum books will feel right at home with Penelope Blue.

Trust by Kylie Scott

4 Stars

I read my first Kylie Scott at the end of April, and here I am in mid-July reading my 2nd. It wasn’t what I expected, but it also made me respect her writing that much more. Twist was more of a romantic comedy and I’m being honest when I say I didn’t read the blurb for Trust. I saw Kylie Scott’s name, got the warm-n-fuzzies and decided I needed to read this too. Judging by the first book I read, I thought I knew her type… light, funny and sexy.

Trust is definitely not in the light category but it is a hard-hitting teen romance that will captivate you. I had a hard time putting this one down, and that isn’t a problem I usually have with YA Romances. This book does have mature content though. “Course” language, underage drinking, teen sex, and PTSD are just a few of the subjects dealt with. I thought it depicted real teen life well, and the characters felt authentic and well developed. It explored the awful spiral of drug addiction, and what often happens when someone tries to turn over a new leaf, but the people around them aren’t ready to forget the past. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am excited to see what else Kylie Scott has to offer.

The Director and Don Juan by Katy Regnery (The Story Sisters #2)

4 Stars

The Director and Don Juan is the second book in Katy Regnery’s The Story Sisters series. Each book is a standalone and while each book can be read alone, I think they are just a little bit better with each other.

I always appreciate a Hispanic hero and Carlos was definitely swoon-worthy. He was confident enough to be the assistant to a powerful woman at work, but he also knew how to take control of their relationship outside the office. I loved when he decided he was going to pursue her and he didn’t let her objections get in the way of what they both wanted.

The Director and Don Juan is the second of four books about the Philadelphia-based Story sisters who are all on the look-out for love.

Heiress Alice Story left her father’s company three years ago in a blaze of glory, inviting all of his employees to jump ship and join her, but only one accepted her offer: mail room clerk, Carlos Vega.

And all the while, they were quietly falling in love with each other.

When Alice is offered a lucrative business deal in Puerto Rico, island-born Carlos is the perfect person to accompany her on her trip as translator, but as they travel together from Philadelphia to Santo Domingo to Ponce, two unlikely co-workers will discover that during their three years working together, their feelings for each other have grown far deeper than they ever could have guessed.

And though business-minded, proper Alice will try her very best to ignore the longings of her heart, scorching hot, insanely sexy Boricua, Carlos, has no intention of letting her go.

The Silent Corner by Dean Koontz (Jane Hawk #1)

4 Stars

My first Dean Koontz was a success! I’ve always been curious about his writing, but believed he would be too scary. I’m not a horror reader, and I have no desire to be. But I couldn’t help but want to see why he was such a popular author. I ran across The Silent Corner on NetGalley and the blurb sounded interesting without being too scary.

It was good!

The book itself was much longer than I expected, but I was thoroughly entertained. The mystery within is creepy without being scary and Jane Hawk is pretty much my hero. I did find it a bit too descriptive for my taste in a few places but I still had a hard time putting it down. I will be definitely be picking up The Whispering Room when it comes out in January.

Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean’s Most Fearless Scientist by Jess Keating

 5 Stars

I don’t usually review picture books, but I knew Shark Lady was the perfect book for my family. My oldest son is 7 and mostly reads nonfiction with a heavy emphasis on sharks. His goal is to write a book about sharks and asked for a typewriter last Christmas so that he could start writing his book.

This book is everything we were looking for. Eugenie Clark lived such an inspirational life. What she achieved as a female scientist is incredible considering the mindset regarding women in the workplace at the time. My son appreciated this book more for the “shark scientist” angle and the fact that she lived the life he dreams of. I loved this book for the female empowerment. Eugenie Clark knew what she wanted from life and she didn’t let the restrictions of society restrict what she wanted to achieve. Shark Lady gave me a glimpse of a woman that I can’t wait to know more about. This book is a real gem and I’m glad we found it. We ordered a copy for our bookshelf and can’t wait to see it in its final form.
