The Silent Corner by Dean Koontz (Jane Hawk #1)

4 Stars

My first Dean Koontz was a success! I’ve always been curious about his writing, but believed he would be too scary. I’m not a horror reader, and I have no desire to be. But I couldn’t help but want to see why he was such a popular author. I ran across The Silent Corner on NetGalley and the blurb sounded interesting without being too scary.

It was good!

The book itself was much longer than I expected, but I was thoroughly entertained. The mystery within is creepy without being scary and Jane Hawk is pretty much my hero. I did find it a bit too descriptive for my taste in a few places but I still had a hard time putting it down. I will be definitely be picking up The Whispering Room when it comes out in January.

Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean’s Most Fearless Scientist by Jess Keating

 5 Stars

I don’t usually review picture books, but I knew Shark Lady was the perfect book for my family. My oldest son is 7 and mostly reads nonfiction with a heavy emphasis on sharks. His goal is to write a book about sharks and asked for a typewriter last Christmas so that he could start writing his book.

This book is everything we were looking for. Eugenie Clark lived such an inspirational life. What she achieved as a female scientist is incredible considering the mindset regarding women in the workplace at the time. My son appreciated this book more for the “shark scientist” angle and the fact that she lived the life he dreams of. I loved this book for the female empowerment. Eugenie Clark knew what she wanted from life and she didn’t let the restrictions of society restrict what she wanted to achieve. Shark Lady gave me a glimpse of a woman that I can’t wait to know more about. This book is a real gem and I’m glad we found it. We ordered a copy for our bookshelf and can’t wait to see it in its final form.

Royal Bastards by Andrew Shvarts

 4 Stars

I never expected to love Royal Bastards like I do.

This is one of those books that you can’t even talk about because everything you want to say is a spoiler. I will say there were way more twists than I expected and most of them were not pleasant. There is some romance, but it is definitely not the meat of this story. This is the 1st book in a planned trilogy, and I already know I will read every. single. one. I am in.

The beginning of this book reads more like MG and the vocabulary is oddly modern for the type of historical fantasy I was expecting. When I started I thought it would end up being a light fantasy like My Lady Jane. It definitely takes a darker turn though and sets itself firmly on the YA shelf. It is political, violent and magical with a definite world that is solidly set. I hope the physical book gets a world map, and I can’t wait to see the fan art for these characters (and creatures).

Dominic by Marie James (Cerberus MC #4)

4.5 Stars

After finishing Shadow, I was eager to start Dominic. I was eager for the book, but not necessarily the character. Dom hasn’t been around Cerberus much because he’s been away with the military. He is Kincaid’s brother, and while not a full member,  he is accepted and does help with missions when he is in town.

I didn’t read the blurb, so going in I expected him to be with Bri. He is definitely not with Bri, but Mak is a gorgeous pink haired spitfire that is trying to deal with the horrors of her past. I loved her instantly and the attraction between them is intense. This is another one that I had a hard time putting down. Dom is into BDSM so the sex scenes are different from previous books. I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as Shadow, but it was still a very solid book. I am so excited about Snatch’s book. I need to know what’s going on with him. Hopefully its released soon!

Dominic Anderson knows exactly what he wants in life:
simplicity, safety, and solidarity with his brothers. He’s vowed to spend each
day living his life exactly how he chooses since the day his wife betrayed him
and his four year military career turned into twenty.
Returning home after retirement from the Marines, he’s
traded the sand in the Middle East for that of the New Mexico desert, Humvees
for a motorcycle, and the comradery of men in uniform for the occasional woman
at his feet.
Life was perfect until Makayla “Poison” Evans, Renegade MC
Princess, knocked on his door, bruises on her face, neck, and arms, and no
money to pay the cab driver. Pink hair, perfect body, and a mouth that Dom
yearned to teach a million lessons, Mak asks more from him than he’s conceded
to a woman in decades.
She needs his help, his protection, and against his better
judgment, she expects him to keep her secrets. Only her secrets are deadly,
dangerous, and have the potential to start a war between two MCs.
At what point does safeguarding a woman become a betrayal to
the men Dominic calls his family? More importantly, can he get back the
sanctity of his home once Makayla is no longer in the picture, or will he be
forever tainted by her poison?

Love Me in the Dark by Mia Asher

4.5 Stars

Deciding to read Love Me in the Dark by Mia Asher was a no-brainer. Arsen is on my must-read-ASAP list, and even though I haven’t gotten to it, I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews about it from my most trusted GoodReads friends.

Love Me in the Dark is emotional and completely immersive. I felt like I was in Paris with Valentina and Sebastien. I felt everything while reading this book.

I wish I were anywhere else but here, standing next to a man who makes me feel as though I’m drowning and flying at the same time. But even that lie sounds empty to my ears. Because if I’m honest with myself, there’s no place I’d rather be.

Then there was the Cover-Lust – I love beautiful covers, but I’m not usually a fan of covers with people on them…. especially the half-naked covers that romance novels usually sport. BUT there’s something about the man on this cover that makes me want to buy a copy of it just so I can stare at him…. and stare some more.

This was a great 1st time read for Mia Asher. I definitely see more of her work in my future.

Two strangers
in Paris …
One passionate,
earth-shattering kiss.
He was the
artist upstairs
with the
tantalizing smile and laughing eyes.
He was the
devil inviting me to sin,
seducing me to
dance in the bright moonlight.
He was desire
and need.
When he touched
me, my body sang–
my soul came
alive.
But I belonged
to another man,
and he didn’t
want to let me go.

Living With Doubt by Riann C. Miller (The Regret Series #2)

4 Stars!

I have been waiting for this book for over a year. Living With Regret was the first book I requested off of NetGalley that I absolutely loved. It was my first experience with Riann’s writing, and the first time that I desperately wanted a side couple to get their own book. Living With Doubt is that book.

I REALLY liked the parts of Lacey we saw in Living With Regret. I found her less likable here, but only because it took her so long to get on board with Jake. These two are hot together, and Jake is pretty perfect. I got frustrated with how long it too for them to really be together but in the end it was worth it. The epilogue was everything I wanted, and gave me hope that there will be another book in the series.

If you haven’t read Living With Regret, no worries, this book is perfectly readable (and enjoyable) without having read the 1st book. This isn’t a series where you feel like you are missing something if you skip a book. But I did love that book, so I would still recommend it.

She’s hiding from everyone… I don’t need a happily ever after filled with fake promises, animosity and eventually a divorce to be content. I’m living the dream…my dream, regardless of what anyone thinks of me. My meager life was perfect until a cocky football player wormed his way into my existence.

Once upon a time, I played an unconscious role in my own life, a mistake I have no plans of repeating. I pride myself with my outspoken and frequently excessive nature. It’s the consistent reminder of the person I refuse to become ever again.

He’s the ultimate playboy…

Life is perfect. I’ve lived and breathed football since I was a kid, and now I’m making millions playing in the NFL. I keep women around for one reason, but never the same one. The only attachments I need are family and friends but life has a bizarre way of proving a person wrong. When a concussion leaves my best-friend’s life spinning out of control, the last thing I expected was to meet an outrageous woman who leaves me begging for more.

She lives in New York.

I live in Arizona. She promised me one night, but I discovered that’s not enough. Now, I need to figure out if I’m a pro off the field because I’m about to play the biggest game of my life.

Excerpt
“You want to tell me why you’re here?” She tilts her head
back, gracing me with the view of those beautiful blue eyes.
My lips quirk up into a smile. “I told you already. My dick
misses you. I tried to tell him you aren’t interested in a repeat, but he
wasn’t convinced.”
“You’re seriously talking about your dick as though it’s a
person? I thought only horny teenagers did shit like that?” She raises an
eyebrow before pushing herself off my lap.
“What can I say, around you that’s exactly how I feel.” I
might be smirking, but I’m not joking. All I have to do is think about her and
I’m rock hard. “I’ve already agreed to be your dirty little secret, so what’s
the big deal? I’m going to be in town for…a few more days. A week or so tops,
so I don’t really see what the problem is.”
Her eyes dart around the room before finally stopping on me.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea.”
“Why not?” I counter. “We’ve already been together, and it’s
not like I’m asking you to skip work or even fucking date me.” I attempt to
keep the frustration out of my voice, but this woman is starting to drive me
crazy.
“Look, it’s not you, it’s me—” She stops talking when I fall
back onto her bed in laughter. I end up laughing so hard I have to wipe my
eyes.
“Do you have any idea how many times I’ve had to say that?
Shit, the irony here is classic.”
“I’m serious, Girard.”
“So am I, Davis.” I hate it when she calls me Girard. I want
to be more than just a football player in her eyes.
“You’re just not my type,” she adds in a lame attempt to
prove some point about us not being together.

“I’m not asking to marry you, Davis. I just want to fuck
your brains out for a few days before I fly back to my side of the country.”

Provocative by Lisa Renee Jones (White Lies Duet #1)

4 Stars

I am completely feeling this White Lies duet, and I am seriously already in love with Faith and Nick together. They fit, and the chemistry is off the charts, and I am loving it.

Nick is an attorney that is all alpha but with a sweet, protective side too. His reputation is such that he is given the nickname “Tiger” and people respect and know him both in and out of the courtroom. Faith is an artist and independent. She has a past that has left her damaged and closed off, but trying to carry on and make everyone but herself happy. She is running the family winery and pushing aside her artistic dreams to fulfill her dead father’s wishes.

Then there is THE CHEMISTRY. The chemistry between these two is unbelievable. There is tension and smoldering and it is GOOD. This is a cliffhanger, so be forewarned, but the 2nd book is coming out July 18th so the wait isn’t TOO long.
