Garden of Thorns by Amber Mitchell

4 Stars

I’m pretty sure the reason I wanted to read this book was because of the cover. I mean, LOOK AT IT!

I’ll be honest with you here. I haven’t read much of the mainstream YA Fantasy out there right now, so I can’t tell you if “it’s been done before”. What I can tell you is this book drew me in and kept me there. The slavery conditions Rose experiences are incomprehensible and create an instant “bad guy”. From the very beginning, there was always something happening, and I couldn’t put this book down.

I have two minor complaints. I usually enjoy “insta-love” (especially the fated kind) but this was a little fast, even for me. After I got over the initial “insta-love” shock I was completely on board with the romance. I also felt like Rose got too involved in the group too quickly. She went from being imprisoned, then training the next day, and being involved in her first mission the next. She jumped in with both feet, and they seemed to welcome her.

Amber Mitchell said she wrote this as a standalone with room for a sequel. She is completely right. I finished this book and was satisfied with where it ended, BUT I would 100% read a sequel. In fact, I’m hoping there is a sequel. Rose experienced so much growth in this book that I can’t wait to see how she handles what comes next.

THE BLURB

Before surviving the Scorpius bacterium, Tace Justice was a good ole Texas cowboy who served his country and loved his mama. After Scorpius, the world became dark, dangerous, and deadly… and so did he. The Vanguard medic is stronger, faster, and smarter than before, but he’s lost the line between right and wrong. His passion is absolute, and when he focuses it on one woman, there’s no turning back for either of them.

Sami Steel has been fighting to survive right alongside Tace, convincing the Vanguard soldiers she’s one of them. In truth, Sami is a former hacker turned government agent who worked at The Bunker, where scientists stored both contaminants and cures. Only she knows the location, and she’s not telling. Yet when sexual fire explodes between her and Tace, she’ll face even that hell again to save him.

Justice Ascending by Rebecca Zanetti (The Scorpius Syndrome #3)

4 Stars

Rebecca Zanetti is one of those authors I can’t get enough of. Sami and Tace are a couple that I have been rooting for from the first inklings of attraction and finally getting to read their story was something I’ve been looking forward to.

Unfortunately, I didn’t fall in love with Sami and Tace the way I have with all the other couples. I’m not sure what got in the way, but their relationship just felt like more of the same. That being said, “the same” was still pretty good and I couldn’t put it down.

There is a major plot development in this book and I still have no idea where it’s going. It looks like a new couple has been added and I have a feeling little Lena will end up playing a big part in the series towards the end… other than that I’m just along for the ride. I have faith that all the little strings will end up in one heck of a bow with the final book (whenever that may be…).

On a side note… it has taken me 3 BOOKS to realize that the last name of each of the Heros is in the title of the book they are featured in…. I feel like such a ditz sometimes.

Justice Ascending will be releasing January 31, 2017.

Shadow Fall by Audrey Grey RELEASE DAY!

This book has a definite Hunger Games vibe, and for me, that is a GOOD THING. Shadow Fall is one of the best YA books I have read this year and I am SO READY for the next book in this series. If you have read all the popular YA Dystopian novels, you may not enjoy it as much because I’ve heard it is largely a mix of elements from different Dystopian series. This wasn’t a problem for me because I am sadly way behind on my popular YA fiction. You can read my original review here. I was snooping around Audrey Grey’s social media and see that the next book is expected to be Shadow Rise. I am stalking Amazon for a pre-order on this because I need it.

Shadow Fall By Audrey Grey

5 STARS!!!!!!!!!

This is definitely YA Dystopian at its best. Shadow Fall by Audrey Grey is the 1st book in the Shadow Fall series. I finished this late last night, and I am so ready for the next book. It definitely reminds me of The Hunger Games, but completely different at the same time. There are some basic similarities, but this is its own story. I’ve heard comparisons to other YA Dystopian series, but I haven’t read them, so I can’t speak for that. I will say that Shadow Fall is one of the best books I’ve read this year.

There are many characters at play in Shadow Fall and I found they each had their own very unique voice. The beginning of a love triangle comes into play and while Caspian makes me feel more “comfortable”, Riser has a very compelling rawness to him. I know so many of you will hate this comparison, but in Twilight terms Caspian is Jacob and Riser is Edward. My two favorite characters are actually “supporting” characters. Teagan is completely awesome and I hope we see much more of this Subversive character in the following book(s). Then there’s Flame and much like her name, she is a definite fireball.

This is one of those books that I picked because of the cover and it turned out to be an amazing read. Shadow Fall isn’t even out yet, and I already can’t wait for its sequel Shadow Rise. Release day for Shadow Fall is November 22, 2016.

The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid

4 Stars!

This book was unexpected and unique. I thought I knew where this book was going based on the blurb, but I found myself in a completely different area wrestling with the question of what “being human” means.

I don’t enjoy cruelty at all and it will easily turn me off. I found it a bit more acceptable in this case because cruelty is pretty much the basis of the story. But Reader beware there is both animal and people cruelty in this book.

The problems I had with the story line, can’t be discussed because MAJOR SPOILERS! I didn’t really enjoy the ending, but not necessarily because of what happened. It was more about how it played out and how long it took. This book could have easily been expanded into 2 or 3 books. It is a rich world with lots of room for exploration. I found The Diabolic to be very compact for a 400 page book.

Disappointments aside, I really enjoyed this book. I found it to be a real page turner and it had some complete twists that I never saw coming. If there was a sequel, I would definitely read it.

Shadow Falling By Rebecca Zanetti Release Day!

THE BLURB

“Sexy, tough, and deftly sprinkled with dark humor.”—New York Times bestselling author Larissa Ione

Before the Scorpius Syndrome tore through North America and nearly wiped out the population, Vivienne Wellington was the FBI’s best profiler. The bacteria got her anyway. But she survived. She recovered. And when she woke up from a drug-nightmare of captivity, her trust in her fellow man had gone from shaky at best to nonexistent. Her mysterious rescuer wants to convince her he’s the exception. But no matter how tempting he is, with his angel’s eyes and devil’s tongue, Vinnie knows she shouldn’t trust him.

If the FBI were still around they would rate Raze Shadow as one of the bad guys. His military training can’t wipe out his association with the Mercenaries, the most feared gang in a thousand miles. His loyalties are compromised. He won’t even tell Vinnie his real name. But there’s no FBI in the new America of fear and firepower, only instinct and risk. And the way his arms wrap around her tells its own story. Whatever else Raze is concealing, he can’t hide his desire . . .

“Thrilling post-apocalyptic romance at its dark, sizzling best!” —Lara Adrian

Today is release day for Shadow Falling by Rebecca Zanetti. She is an absolute auto-buy author for me. I LOVED her Dark Protectors series, and since then I have been pre-ordering every book she writes as soon as they are announced. Each installment of Scorpius Syndrome focuses on a different couple, but there is an arcing storyline that connects each book. You can read my original review here.
