Nico by Sarah Castille (Ruin & Revenge #1)

4.5 Stars!

I’ve never really read Mafia books. It doesn’t appeal to me. I’m not into bad guys being bad. I don’t like violence, torture, and murder. That’s just not my thing. I thought I might be missing out on something though, so I picked up a couple of Mafia type books to see how I actually feel about them. Not just what I assume, but really sitting down and getting into one of these stories.

The 1st one I read wasn’t good enough to post on my blog. Yes, I wrote a short review on it for GoodReads so I could remember why I wasn’t really into it but I thought that it was the end of Mafia stories for me. I figured they just weren’t my taste and almost skipped this one. I’m so lucky I didn’t.

“Although, if I met a dude so hot he made me want to rip off my panties, I might not care if he was a mob boss or an enemy soldier. Maybe I should stop wearing my comfy cotton briefs in case I meet a man like that. Satin and lace are easy to shred, but I’d probably lose a leg if I tried to tear off my Fruit of the Looms in a frenzy of lust”

Nico is the 1st book in Sarah Castille’s new Ruin & Revenge series. It was the 1st Mafia book I’ve loved, and I will definitely be in line to read the 2nd book, Luca, coming out in May 2017.

Nico releases December 6, 2016.

What If It’s Right? by J.B. Heller

4 Stars

J.B. Heller is a new author for me, and I’m so glad I found her. What If It’s Right? is an interesting story that could have been handled badly but J.B. pulled it off very nicely.

You watch Tory and Weston’s relationship progress from a normal child/adult relationship to “something more” once they are both adults. In order to show the progression of the relationship, the book is told in a series of scenes from the past with “time jumps” in between. This generally isn’t my favorite book format, but I think it is definitely the best way to tell Tory and Weston’s story. It allows you to truly see the way their relationship grows and changes in a natural way.

This was a unique story that I really enjoyed. I’ll be keeping my eyes on J.B. Heller for future books.

When I opened the front door and came face to face with Finn’s bare arse I screamed, “What the hell Finn!” I turned my back on him and faced the closed door, “What are you doing? Put some damn pants on.”

“Ah, can you give us a minute?” Finn’s voice sounded small and embarrassed.

“Yep, you betcha. Call out when you’re decent, we are going to be having a serious conversation as soon as clothes are back in play.” Then I re-opened the front door and stepped back out on to the porch.

A minute or two later I heard Finn call out, “Decent.” And I turned the handle and let myself back in.

My jaw dropped when I saw Nixie sitting on the couch beside Finn. Her face as beat red as his. “Wha— Ah— I’m so confused.” I stuttered. “I wish I hadn’t seen what I clearly just saw, but I’m happy to see you, Nixie.”

Her shoulders relaxed in relief, and she gave me a small finger wave, “It’s good to see you too Tory. Sorry about—” her hand gestured between the two of them, “this,” she finished.

“Me too,” I muttered.

Finn was smiling brightly, and I glared at him as I plonked down on the couch that I had not just seen him having sex on. “You’re paying to have that couch cleaned.” I told him. “I watch Netflix on that couch!” I whined. “Couldn’t you have taken it to your bedroom? I mean seriously, what made you think the couch was a good place for you two to be bumping uglies?”

Nixie’s eyes bounced between Finn and myself with a puzzled expression on her pretty face.

I stood up, “You know what, don’t answer that, I can’t deal with this today. I’m exhausted. I just got an awesome tattoo, by the way. Just so you know. I was going to surprise you with it, but you don’t get to see the awesomeness until later now.”

“You what?” Finn asked.

I held my hand up in his face, “Talk to the hand ‘cause the face ain’t listening. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go scrub my eyeballs with bleach if you don’t mind.” I told him as I walked down the hallway. Every time I closed my damn eyes I could see Finn thrusting into Nixie and I wanted to hurl.

My day couldn’t possibly get any worse. Talking sex and babies with Weston, then seeing Finn’s arse as he pumped into his ex-girlfriend on my Netflix couch. I needed a huge glass of wine and a scalding hot bath to wash it all away.

Shadow Fall by Audrey Grey RELEASE DAY!

This book has a definite Hunger Games vibe, and for me, that is a GOOD THING. Shadow Fall is one of the best YA books I have read this year and I am SO READY for the next book in this series. If you have read all the popular YA Dystopian novels, you may not enjoy it as much because I’ve heard it is largely a mix of elements from different Dystopian series. This wasn’t a problem for me because I am sadly way behind on my popular YA fiction. You can read my original review here. I was snooping around Audrey Grey’s social media and see that the next book is expected to be Shadow Rise. I am stalking Amazon for a pre-order on this because I need it.

Eternal Heat by J.L. White (Firework Girls #3)

4.5 Stars!

Confession Time! I’ve had this book in my possession for a couple of months now and have been hoarding it for a pick-me-up. That time is now. 3 of the last 4 books I read have been “meh” at best and I needed something that I KNEW would be good. Once again, J.L. White did not let me down.

As far as “The Firework Girls” go, Ashley was the story I was least looking forward to. Her appearances throughout the series haven’t really piqued my interest other than her insane musical talent. I was in for a good surprise when I got to her story and realized there was a lot of depth and heartache within her. Her characterization within the books made sense and I came away feeling like I finally knew her. My favorite of this series is still Midnight Heat. You can read my review here. This is a series of standalones so you can read them out of order, but each girl does make an appearance in each book so there might be very minor spoilers. The last book in The Firework Girls series is Nuclear Heat and it is the one I have been waiting for. I’m expecting it to be the best of the series and hope it doesn’t disappoint.

All of The Firework Girls books are available on Kindle Unlimited!

Shadow Fall By Audrey Grey

5 STARS!!!!!!!!!

This is definitely YA Dystopian at its best. Shadow Fall by Audrey Grey is the 1st book in the Shadow Fall series. I finished this late last night, and I am so ready for the next book. It definitely reminds me of The Hunger Games, but completely different at the same time. There are some basic similarities, but this is its own story. I’ve heard comparisons to other YA Dystopian series, but I haven’t read them, so I can’t speak for that. I will say that Shadow Fall is one of the best books I’ve read this year.

There are many characters at play in Shadow Fall and I found they each had their own very unique voice. The beginning of a love triangle comes into play and while Caspian makes me feel more “comfortable”, Riser has a very compelling rawness to him. I know so many of you will hate this comparison, but in Twilight terms Caspian is Jacob and Riser is Edward. My two favorite characters are actually “supporting” characters. Teagan is completely awesome and I hope we see much more of this Subversive character in the following book(s). Then there’s Flame and much like her name, she is a definite fireball.

This is one of those books that I picked because of the cover and it turned out to be an amazing read. Shadow Fall isn’t even out yet, and I already can’t wait for its sequel Shadow Rise. Release day for Shadow Fall is November 22, 2016.
