I pretty much seem to love everything Rebecca Zanetti writes. This 2nd installment of The Scorpius Syndrome is no exception. In Shadow Falling, we get to watch the romance between Raze and Vinnie that was teased in the 1st book, but it also greatly expands on the main storyline. In typical Zanetti style, she tells the story of Vinnie and Raze’s romance. I love that her men are Alphas, but her women are also strong, smart, and independent. Once again though, I would say the romance is secondary to the plot, and that’s a good thing.
Vinnie is a well respected and published FBI “profiler”. (though she prefers not to use that term) Raze Shadow is one of the elite Vanguard lieutenants. His life before Scorpius is shrouded in mystery and we finally find out his secret. His secret, and the revelation/resolution of it are the driving force behind the story this time. Yes, they are still trying to find the Bunker and the cure for Scorpius but that takes a backseat to the immediate problems threatening the Vanguard.
Vinnie is adjusting to life in Vanguard after being given various experimental drugs during her time being held captive by the President. Part of her new life includes having hallucinations starring her crazy, dead stepmother. Her interactions with her stepmother are hilarious, and it was refreshing to read about a character that is super smart and successful and trying to overcome the effects of the Scorpius bacteria combined with the experimental drugs.
I can’t wait to read about Sami and Tace in the next book. They have been two of my favorite characters from the beginning and I need to know what Sami is hiding about her past. We also meet Maureen and Greyson in this book and there is chemistry. My guess is they will be the stars of book 4 (assuming there is one). I thought this was just going to be a trilogy, but I don’t really think the storyline can be wrapped up with one more book. I hope I’m right.
Shadow Falling is being released August 30, 2016.
I received a copy of this book from Kensington Books via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
