I can’t even talk about how much I loved this book. REALLY. I just can’t right now. (Can’t as in I was up half the night reading and I’m about to fall asleep on my computer if I try right now.)
OK. I’m back.
I think I had a huge smile on my face for about 90% of this book. For some reason I just completely related to Grace. I loved her. I thought she was hilarious, snarky, smart, strong and vulnerable all rolled into a gorgeous polka dotted package. She had me laughing out loud and rooting for her from the beginning. She faced some harsh situations in her life, but she was determined that those actions not define her. It was hard, and she had some setbacks, but ultimately she proved that she was not the same person she had been.
Chris was pretty much the all around perfect southern gentleman. He was an extremely talented football player, but his success didn’t go to his head. His personality was genuinely caring and responsible and HOT.
My favorite scene by far was the ladder scene excerpted below, but I also loved when he forcibly removed her from the couch, so that she would sleep in the bed.
“You just carried me, Christopher. You picked me up and carried me, and now all the weakling men out there who try to impress me with their brains are going to make my girly parts yawn. I am ruined for normal men, and it’s all your fault!
Don’t even get me started on some of the characters. I’m so excited that Sebastian is going to be the main character in the next book. He has intrigued me from Spinning Out and I can’t wait to get into his story. AAANNNNNNDDDD I’m hoping that Bailey and Mason get a story, because I love them already.
I received a copy of this book from Give Me Books Promotions in exchange for an honest review.
The favor seemed simple: Keep my new stepsister out of trouble for one summer.
I’ve never met Grace Lee, but Mom tells me she’s a quiet and artsy college student with a troubled past. When I agreed to let her stay with me, I thought it was no big deal. I expected to share my apartment with a sullen girl who’d spend hours locked in her room.
I didn’t expect a walking fantasy determined to make me lose my cool. I didn’t expect a woman with secrets so dark, so deep, I’d throw away everything if it would save her from the past.

Rushing in to do this favor is turning my life upside down—and not just because Grace needs her ass spanked. Keep her out of trouble? Grace is the trouble. And I want in.

Rushing In Excerpt © 2016 by Lexi RyanChris arches a brow and skims his gaze over my body—correction, my dress and Chucks. “You’re gonna go hiking in that?”

I shrug. “It’s not like it’s full-length and gonna get tangled around my legs or anything.”

His gaze drifts down my body again, this time landing on the thigh visible beneath the hem of my dress. “It’s certainly not,” he mumbles, and the way he says it has my cheeks burning and me reaching for my water.

So damn thirsty.

We finish packing up our lunch together, and after we put the cooler back in the car, I grab the park pamphlet out of the front seat. “Come on,” I say, nodding in the direction of the outlook. “It’s my turn to be in charge.”

The park is beautiful, but as soon as we enter the woods and I see the overlook, my breath catches. From here, we have a view of the ravine below and the creek rushing through the bottom. Mossy rock faces make up the ravine walls, and trees protrude from them. It’s possibly the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

I head past the overlook and take the stairs down into the ravine. It’s shady back here and feels ten degrees cooler than our picnic table in the sun.

At the bottom of the stairs, the trail splits in three directions, and when I follow the sign with the three, Chris puts his hand on my arm. “Hey, this one has ladders.”

I arch a brow and drop my gaze to my shoes. “I can handle it.”

Something passes over his face I don’t understand, and then he sighs and nods. “Okay, but I’m climbing the ladders behind you. If any creep is going to be looking up your dress today, it’s gonna be me.”

My cheeks heat, and my brain instantly diagrams his words and starts analyzing the nuance of each. Just comedy or more? Stupid brain. “Fair enough.”

He mutters something that sounds like “Dreams really do come true,” but I can’t be sure.

The trail leads down into the ravine and along the creek bed. It’s so much cooler down here, and I love the sound of the creek rock crunching under my feet as we walk along.

By the time we come upon the first ladder, there’s no one else around.

“Ladies first,” he says, gesturing toward the ladder.

“Pervert,” I mutter, but I move forward and begin my climb. The rungs are coated in mud, and when I’m halfway up, one foot slips and suddenly Chris’s hands are there, holding me steady, his hands strong and warm against the backs of my legs.

My breath catches, and I force myself to breathe and find my footing. The feel of his hands against my skin causes something to swirl hot and tight low in my belly.

“Are you okay?” he asks, his voice as thick as the forest beyond the trail.

I’m not okay. I’m afraid to move. Afraid not to move. Trapped by a fear that has nothing to do with a slippery ladder and everything to do with falling.

Then, slowly, his thumbs begin to slide over my skin. His hands inch up my thighs until his fingertips skim the bottom edge of my underwear and slip under to trace the bottom curve of my ass.

I cannot breathe.

I force myself to turn my head and look down at him. His jaw is set tight, a picture of self-control, but when his eyes meet mine, his face relaxes and he shoots me a boyish grin. I attempt my best poker face. “Are you copping a feel, Christopher Montgomery?”

His grin goes wide, putting his dimples on full display. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he says, his Southern accent drawing out his words. “I’m just trying to perform a necessary rescue mission.”

“Do I look like I need rescuing?” I ask. Under the lace edge of my panties, his thumb strokes again, a long, slow motion that makes me want to close my eyes and moan. I resist and hold his gaze.

“Who said you’re the one I’m rescuing? Maybe I’m trying to save myself.” He drops his hands and grabs a hold of the sides of the ladder, then he climbs up behind me so his body is pressed against mine, my back to his front. His mouth hovers above my ear, his breath hot and uneven. “Because I swear if I have to go much longer without touching you, I’m going to implode.”

His lips skim my earlobe, and my eyes float closed. My brain has no room for sight when it’s overloaded with sensations. His lips on my ear. His hard chest against my back. His breath against my neck. “I need to know, Grace.”

I open my eyes and swallow hard. I don’t want to talk. Not right now. I’m too afraid I’ll ruin this moment with my choppy stutter. “What?”

“I need to know . . .” He leans his forehead against my shoulder, and I watch his knuckles turn white as he tightens his grip on the side of the ladder.

On the ground beneath us, someone clears his throat. “You two heading up or down?”

Chris mutters a curse and takes a step down so I have the freedom to move. I scramble up the ladder with him behind me. When we reach the top, I can’t look at him.

“Sorry about that,” he calls to the people below, then he grabs my wrist and pulls me off to the right toward a rocky alcove just off the trail. A wooden sign tells me this is “The Devil’s Ice Box,” and beyond the sign, a thin waterfall drizzles into a pool of crystal-clear water. Chris leads the way, following the rocky edge around to the backside of this semi-secluded space and stopping by the waterfall. I pass him, feigning interest in the rocks and water so I don’t have to meet his eyes. There’s a cavern behind the waterfall, a haven from the falling water.

“I have to know,” Chris says, his words nearly drowned out by the falling water. “Is it just me? Everything I feel when you’re close to me? Tell me you feel it too.”

Author’s note: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

J.L. White is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I’ve just started reading her books this year, and am becoming more and more of a fan with each one. Beautiful Mine is the first book in her new Beautiful Rivers series. You can read my original review here.

Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova (Brooklyn Brujas #1)

Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova is the first book in her new Brooklyn Brujas series. It is a badly needed book, and one I support 100%. It is so refreshing to read about a bisexual bruja, and then the fact that there was no angst about the bisexuality was just perfect. I loved that she just was. There was no big announcement, and you weren’t being beat over the head with it. There was subtlety and nuance and magic.

This book is at its forefront a magical fantasy adventure surrounded by rich culture and tradition. This culture and tradition are things Alex takes for granted, and wishes would go away. She just wants to be a regular girl that goes to school and plays sports and doesn’t worry about magic. Instead, she is a powerful bruja in denial, and it’s up to her to save her family and Los Lagos from the Devourer.

I am in awe of Zoraida Cordova’s way with words. I think my favorite passage was a description of Rishi.

I look at Rishi again. Her hands are decorated with the burnt-amber swirls of henna from her cousin’s wedding this past weekend. She smiles like there’s sunshine inside her and walks like she’s ready to fly. I wish I had a fraction of that. Sometimes when I’m with her long enough, I forget about all the things I can’t tell her – the fear, the cantos, the ghosts. I forget and let myself just be.

The right corner of her lips tug upward, revealing a tiny dimple. The crystal of her nose ring twinkles with the same brightness in her rich-brown eyes. When she looks at me, I feel like she’s seeing right through me. Like she knows I’m hiding a big part of myself.

The romance aspect of this book left a bit to be desired, just because I wanted more of it. I’m a romantic at heart, and really wanted to see more sparks fly with either Rishi or Nova. Even though the next book is supposed to feature one of her sisters, I hope there is a little bit of followup on Alex’s love life. I am so excited to see what’s next in the lives of these Brooklyn brujas. Really, I want to know now.

This book is being released September 6, 2016.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, but I loved it so much that I pre-ordered a copy for my bookshelf.

“Sexy, tough, and deftly sprinkled with dark humor.”—New York Times bestselling author Larissa Ione

Before the Scorpius Syndrome tore through North America and nearly wiped out the population, Vivienne Wellington was the FBI’s best profiler. The bacteria got her anyway. But she survived. She recovered. And when she woke up from a drug-nightmare of captivity, her trust in her fellow man had gone from shaky at best to nonexistent. Her mysterious rescuer wants to convince her he’s the exception. But no matter how tempting he is, with his angel’s eyes and devil’s tongue, Vinnie knows she shouldn’t trust him.

If the FBI were still around they would rate Raze Shadow as one of the bad guys. His military training can’t wipe out his association with the Mercenaries, the most feared gang in a thousand miles. His loyalties are compromised. He won’t even tell Vinnie his real name. But there’s no FBI in the new America of fear and firepower, only instinct and risk. And the way his arms wrap around her tells its own story. Whatever else Raze is concealing, he can’t hide his desire . . .

“Thrilling post-apocalyptic romance at its dark, sizzling best!” —Lara Adrian

Destined for a King by Ashlyn Macnamara (The Bastard Brotherhood)

4 Stars

Destined for a King is a well written beginning to a series that I will definitely be following. Told in alternating POV, it really allowed you to get in the head of both characters and know the true motivations behind their actions.

When you meet Calista Thorne she is fiercely defending her family’s castle from invading forces. The Bastard Brotherhood had just broken the gates and the battle was going downhill quickly. In a last ditch effort, she manages to sink an arrow into the commander, but the castle falls quickly after and he claims the Keep as well as Calista for his own. She is forced to nurse him back to health under threat that her father will meet the same fate as the commander.

Torch is the commander of the Bastard Brotherhood. He is reaching for his destiny, and believes Calista is a part of it. He is rumored to be savage and cruel, but his actions seem to be anything but. His people are completely loyal and Calista soon begins to fall for him as well.

At last she held out her hand. “Give me the sword.”

A roguish smile spread over his features. “Gladly, my lady, but I thought one such as you might prefer to wait until our wedding night to take my sword in hand.”

She gasped. “You know quite well what I meant. You are to put up all weapons until I give you leave, sir.”

Destined for a King was a delight to read. It has a historical feel, but is full of romance, questionable motives, and a touch of fantasy. It was an addictive read that kept me glued to the page. The romance wrapped up nicely, but there’s definitely more to the story. I can’t wait to see what happens next in Claimed by the Commander.

Destined for a King is releasing September 6th, 2016.

Beautiful Mine by J.L. White (Beautiful Rivers Series)

5 Stars

I’m going to come right out and say it. I wasn’t expecting to love this book. The blurb didn’t capture my interest, and if it hadn’t been J.L. White, I would have passed over it. J.L. White is a new discovery for me, and I’ve been slowly working my way through her Firework Girls books. I’ve enjoyed those books so much, and have been savoring them. They are a treat I get to read when I’ve read a couple of bad books and need some relief. Or when I’m ahead on my deadlines. But I know going in that I’m going to get a great, steamy romance. I shouldn’t have had any doubts about this one. I LOVED this book!

Whitney meets Connor while on a pilgrimage across Spain. Whitney’s journey isn’t about religion, it’s about soul searching. She has dedicated her life to her job at a charitable organization that helps child refugees, but her life is unbalanced and she needs to take a step back.

Connor suffers from Wanderlust and travels the world seeking people and experiences. He lives on his boat and sails wherever his heart desires. He changes locations on a whim, sometimes staying only a few days… other times a few months. When he meets Whitney on the Camino del Santiago the attraction is instant and intense. They begin a brief, passionate love affair that leaves a mark on both of their hearts. At the end, they say their goodbyes and go their separate ways.

Many months later, they run across each other at Connor’s family resort. It’s like they were never separated and instantly pick back up where they left off. But the underlying problems are still there. Connor desires to travel the world and be able to change locations at a moments notice and Whitney can’t imagine not having a home base.

And if he did decide to leave, who says he would want me along? Can you still be the wind when you’ve got someone tied to your side?

Because when I’m really honest with myself, I’m afraid he’s still the wind, and I’m over here completely delusional about my ability to capture him.

 I. Couldn’t. Stop. Reading. I started it this morning, intending to only read for half an hour or so…. then the book was over and I was in love. These are the type of characters I read for. These are the type of relationships I crave seeing on a page. The romance was steamy. The sex scenes didn’t feel repetitive, and I genuinely cared about what happened to everyone involved. I can’t wait for the next book.

Definitely an 18+ book.

Beautiful Mine is releasing August 30, 2016.
