Myla was waiting tables to pay the bills while she tried to decide which way to take her fashion design career. Unexpectedly, she caught the eye of Michael Alvarez, the restaurant chain’s CEO and leader of one of the largest cartels in the country. She becomes his and 14 months later he gives her the resources to start her fashion line. She’s his most prized possession and he needs to keep her safe, so he hires the best bodyguard money can buy.
Kyle is hot and smart and a member of Walker Security. He’s offered a job paying a million dollars for 8 weeks of work that he can’t turn down if he wants to infiltrate the cartel. He hopes infiltration will help him find out what happened to Myla and eventually bring down the crime ring. When it turns out that he’s been hired to guard Myla, he doesn’t know if she wants to be rescued or if after more than a year with Alvarez, she’s fallen for her captor.
This is a standalone within a series, so while I haven’t read any of the other books, I was able to understand perfectly what was going on. That being said, what was mentioned of the various characters histories was tantalizing and made me desire to go back and read the previous books in order to get the full history. The book is done in alternating POVs so you are able to get into their minds early on and know their reasoning and true feelings.
The attraction between Myla & Kyle is instant and palpable.
There is something between me and this man, a charge in the air when we are together that can’t be created by choice.
They are constantly fighting the attraction. Myla doesn’t know if she can trust Kyle yet, and he desperately wants her to. He has a moment of weakness and kisses her then berates himself for it.
“If we happen now, you’ll question why. You will fear that I’m setting you up, and fear is not what I want from you.”
“Then what do you want from me?”
“I could tell you trust again, which is true, but right now, in this moment, what I want is you. Every part of you naked, every way I can get you. Beneath me, on top of me, under my tongue, and many other ways.”
This book was hot, and there is a lot of potential for the rest of the series. I know I can’t wait to find out what happens in the rest of the books.
I received this copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
