Nine Minutes by Beth Flynn

5 AMAZING STARS!!!  This book makes me want to reevaluate my rating system… because how can this be just a “5”. It is so much more. This book has been at the top of my TBR list for awhile, but the story just sounded like something I could never get behind…. so it kept getting bypassed for books I thought I would like better. I was wrong. THIS IS BETTER. BETTER THAN BETTER….. It captured me from the very beginning. This smart, relatable girl made a bad decision and it changed her life. HER WHOLE LIFE.

“I knew as well as he did that he deserved what he was getting. It was strange. I thought knowing it and believing it would make it easier, but it didn’t. I thought I would get through his execution unscathed emotionally. But I was only fooling myself.”

I reluctantly started this book, because I found out the sequel (Out of Time) was released this week. I thought I would finally just get it off my list, and out of the way and it wouldn’t be staring at me everytime I tried to decide what to read next. I started it while I put my kids down for their nap, and got absolutely nothing done for the rest of the day. I COULD NOT STOP READING. I just couldn’t. I kept saying “I’ll just finish this last chapter… and another… and another” until it was just “let me finish this book”. The twists and turns just kept on and most of them I never saw coming.

RECOMMENDED FOR READERS 18 AND OLDER DUE TO STRONG LANGUAGE, SEXUAL SITUATIONS, AND VIOLENCE. This is Book One in a series. On May 15, 1975, fifteen-year-old Ginny Lemon is abducted from a convenience store in Fort Lauderdale by a member of one of the most notorious and brutal motorcycle gangs in South Florida. From that moment on, her life is forever changed. She gets a new name, a new identity and a new life in the midst of the gang’s base on the edge of the Florida Everglades—a frightening, rough and violent world much like the swamps themselves, where everyone has an alias and loyalty is tantamount to survival. And at the center of it all is the gang’s leader, Grizz: massive, ruggedly handsome, terrifying and somehow, when it comes to Ginny, tender. She becomes his obsession and the one true love of his life. So begins a tale of emotional obsession and manipulation, of a young woman ripped from everything she knows and forced to lean on the one person who provides attention, affection and care: her captor. Precocious and intelligent, but still very much a teenager, Ginny struggles to adapt to her existence, initially fighting and then coming to terms with her captivity. Will she be rescued? Will she escape? Will she get out alive—or get out at all? Part psychological thriller, part coming-of-age novel, filled with mystery, romance and unexpected turns, Nine Minutes takes readers into the world of one motorcycle gang and inside the heart of a young girl, whose abduction brought about its fall.

Wicked Deeds On A Winter’s Night by Kresley Cole

5 STARS! I am completely loving this series! I’m savoring each one and making myself take a break between books so I can take my time and enjoy them. Each one features a couple varying from Vampires to Valkyrie to Witches (and more!).

Mari is a very young witch that is not yet immortal, but predicted to be the most powerful to have ever existed. She is young and modern; Powerful but inexperienced. 99 times out of 100 her spells end in explosions so she is reluctant to cast them, but when they work, they really work.

Bowen is over 1000 years old and still mourning the loss of his mate 200 years ago. He is trying to win the Hie so he can bring his long dead mate back to life. He isn’t looking for a new love, and is angry when Mari starts awakening feelings in him that he hasn’t felt in centuries. They bump heads during this epic challenge and neither is the same after.

“A vampire beat you? And a witch cursed you? Damn, Scot, seems you’re having a fuck-all month.”

That quote perfectly fits the attitude of the book. Funny, steamy, and full of twists that I never saw coming.

Bowen MacRieve of the Lykae clan was nearly destroyed when he lost the one woman meant for him. The ruthless warrior grew even colder, never taking another to his bed—until a smoldering encounter with his enemy, Mariketa the Awaited, reawakens his darkest desires. When sinister forces unite against her, the Highlander finds himself using all his strength and skill to keep her alive. Temporarily stripped of her powers, Mari is forced to take refuge with her sworn adversary. It’s rumored that no one can tempt Bowen’s hardened heart, but soon passion burns between them. Though a future together is impossible, she fears he has no intention of letting her go. If they defeat the evil that surrounds them, can Mari deny Bowen when he demands her body and soul—or will she risk everything for her fierce protector?

Humanity by J.D. Knutson

Five gunshots were all it took to end everything Candace had ever cared about; now, falling in love with her parents’ killer might give her everything she never knew she needed.

Candace has been raped more times than she cares to remember –this is a normal lifestyle for a pretty eighteen-year-old girl surviving the expiration of the United States. When her parents are shot before her eyes, the deer that would have sustained them stolen, she knows their deaths would have come eventually – that’s simply how life is lived. This doesn’t keep her from plotting the murder of the man who shot them. As soon as she gets the chance, she opens fire on him – running out of bullets after only two shots. But Gideon’s not going to make things too easy on himself; he refuses to kill her until she’s a true threat. Paradoxically, she can’t leave his side for fear that he might disappear in her absence; she insists on following him until provided with an occasion to kill him.

Circumstances change when Candace’s opportunity is almost stolen from her; three travelers shoot Gideon. She rescues him out of the supreme aspiration that it be HER who ends his life. However, him being injured and unable to defend himself isn’t exactly what she had in mind. As a result, she finds herself getting to know him better than she had planned. What surfaces is a poignant statement on love, forgiveness, and humanity.

HUMANITY is a romantic survivalist novel for new/young adults. Topics such as rape and sexual abuse are involved, amidst lighter but also serious matters.

This book is set about 30 years after the collapse of the United States government. It seems the rest of the world is fine, but what used to be the United States is now a cruel, harsh environment that had me nearly in tears several times. While it is described beautifully:

The foliage of the city was dense, with plants covering buildings, and trees growing where there had once been nothing but grass. Abandoned as the city was, wildlife came and went as they pleased; the city was nothing more than a part of their forest now.

The reality of it is anything but. After Gideon kills her parents, she tries to kill him without success. At that point, she insists on traveling with him so that she may kill him at her earliest opportunity. She has no one and neither does he.

While the premise of the story sounds crazy. Seriously, who would allow a girl that wanted you dead to travel with you? You can feel the emotions that Candace is grappling with as she travels with this man that she hates. You can feel it as her emotions slowly evolve from hate to dislike, and eventually love. He teaches her to live and survive in their world.

“Candace, you’ve been with me, unarmed, for weeks. You close your eyes all the time – you’ve been sleeping very soundly every night, ever since you started thinking about nothing. Now, close your eyes.”

I rolled them before I closed them.

I literally got butterflies in my stomach from him simply holding her hand. Really, I couldn’t put this book down. I kept on reading until the early hours of the morning and my only disappointment was that the book had an ending. I wanted it to keep on going for a book or two more.

Wicked Ride (Realm Enforcers Book 1) by Rebecca Zanetti

If you love the Dark Protectors, these wicked hot Realm Enforcers are for you!

Alexandra Monzelle is a hard-fighting, heat-packing Seattle vice cop, and she’s not much interested in being protected. Her short skirt and sex-kitten heels are tools to lure her suspects into talking about the deadly new drug hitting the streets. She can take care of herself and then some. Unfortunately, she can’t seem to get that through to Kellach Dunne.

Kellach is a fresh import from Dublin, and he’s landed at the heart of a vicious motorcycle club that deals in guns, narcotics, and mayhem. He’s all male, all rough power—and all interference in her damn investigation. Maybe he’s one of the good guys. Maybe not. Lex knows an affair with an immortal like him would risk everything. No matter how delicious he looks…

I just finished reading the Dark Protectors series last week and LOVED it! This 1st novel in this spinoff series promises to be full of love and excitement as well.

Kellach wasn’t one of the characters I was really intrigued with while reading the Dark Protectors series, but I ended up falling for him anyway. That Irish brogue completely won me over. Alexandra was a tough cookie, but he won her over too…. eventually. As I was reading I kept getting more and more excited for the rest of the books, because so many of the characters sound like they have stories to tell. I can’t wait for Daire or Tori to find love.

Daire focused on Kell once again and lifted an eyebrow. For Daire, that amounted to a full  blown conversation.

See. Sounds like my kind of man. But back to Kellach. They accidently mate… and in the rain.

He stood in the rain, a powerful man, one she couldn’t figure out. “With the bite and the burn? I’ve mated you, baby. Welcome to immortality.”

Then, because it rains A LOT in Seattle

The merest of threads held Kell’s control in check, and a low growl rumbled up from his chest upon seeing his mate. He’d hoped the chilled, pouring rain would dampen the temper roaring through him, yet each sharp prick had escalated the emotions boiling in his blood.

You don’t have to read the first series to enjoy this book, but I do think it would make it more enjoyable. It would also help to introduce you to the ways of their immortal world, like the aforementioned mating. But really, if you like Alpha male love stories with a paranormal twist, I don’t think you can go wrong with this book.
