Kiss My Ash by Leddy Harper

Kiss My Ash by [Harper, Leddy]3.5 Stars

Kiss My Ash by Leddy Harper is a taboo/age gap romance featuring a mother in her 30’s and the 17 year old boy next door. Krista is a single mom that has put her life on hold for the past decade in order to put her everything into providing the best life for her 16 year old daughter. She finally purchases her first home and when she meets her new neighbor it isn’t anything like she expected.

Ash is hard to believe as a 17 year old. He reads much older, which is obviously part of the plot (Krista believes he is older than 17 at the beginning of their relationship). I enjoyed their relationship, but would have liked it better in a different context. All of that being said, this book wasn’t an easy one to put down. I enjoyed it and finished it within a couple of days. The epilogue was golden and really helped cement the story.

I received an advance reader copy of this book that I have chosen to review.

Ash Jenkins was the typical boy next door. Wait, who am I
kidding? There was nothing typical about that boy.
He was tall, ripped, and had the voice of a man twice his
age. Intelligent, sexy as sin, and barely legal.
Sent to live with his dad after getting in some trouble
with the law, he was definitely someone I needed to stay away from.
But he had his sights set on me, and he didn’t try to
hide it.
Did it still make me a cougar if I was the prey?

MVP by Laramie Briscoe (MVP Duet #2)

MVP (The MVP Duet Book 2) by [Briscoe, Laramie]4 Stars

I love that when I read a Laramie Briscoe book, I know what I am going to get. Even more so with MVP, because I was already familiar with the characters it felt like a very long epilogue. That’s OK with me, because the happily ever after is usually my favorite part.

If you read Laramie Briscoe often, you know that her books are not about the drama. It was surprising when she kept “foreshadowing” drama to come. I was curious to see what was going to come of it, because it seemed so outside her usual writing. I should have known that the “drama” turned out to be little more than a ripple in the pond.

Malone and Slater are adorable together, but what I really loved was how they created a “family” for themselves with the people around them. I especially loved how much they treated the housekeeper like a mom. Then there were little cameos by my favorite Moonshine Task Force characters. This was really just a nice relaxing read.

The Hawks by SD Hendrickson

The Hawks: A Novel by [Hendrickson, SD]5 Stars

This was such a good read for me. I didn’t want to put it down, so I didn’t.  It’s been awhile since I’ve seen a book from SD Hendrickson and it was a pleasure to lose myself in it.

The Hawks goes back and forth between two timelines. One that is progressing over weeks/months and another that is over mere hours. One timeline holds the mystery, the other holds the romance, when the two converge it makes it nearly impossible to put down. I will admit, there were parts of the story that left me in tears. There were times when things seemed hopeless. There was devastation. But at the end of it all, there is love and hope and a future that is different than planned.

I loved Javier and I grew to love Cole. If Cole got his own book that would be an auto-buy for me. I can’t wait to see if my wish comes true, but whatever she writes next… I’ll be reading it.

“Sultry
summer of suspense that leads to the fall of a powerful family”
He warned
me. Said hawks were dangerous birds. Their majestic beauty could blind your
eyes as they picked the flesh from your bones. But even hawks have enemies. And
they eventually came for the Hawthorn family. Held us hostage. Demanded
retribution.
But I
wasn’t a Hawthorn. No, I was just the help. Caught in the turmoil of a tragic
family. I worked hard for Delsey Hawthorn. Tried to earn the respect of the
reigning tyrant. Assistant. Event planner. Gardner. Chauffeur. I added it all
to my resume.
And then I
met Javier Hawthorn. Delsey ordered me to stay away from her grandson. But like
a moth to a burning flame, I gravitated toward him. He was so different than my
world. Irresistible. Charming. He brought a calmness to the chaos.
But that
was before the intruders came into the house. Tied us up. Hurt us. We struggled
to get away. We fought to survive. But who were the men behind the masks? Did
we know them? Because someone who got this close to the family at night must be
even closer during the day.

Excerpt
“I’m sorry. I wasn’t trying to upset you.” My hands cupped his cheeks. I peered into his eyes, trying to read him better as I wore my heart on the outside. “I know this is supposed to be casual. But this doesn’t feel casual to me. You are so good to me. So much more than I ever expected. The way you make me feel. I just need to know if you feel the same way. And it’s okay if you don’t. I just need to know the truth.”

Javier rested his forehead against mine. “I feel the same, Sarina.”

“You do?” The elation filled my chest and I leaned up to kiss him, but his words stopped me.

“I feel the same, but you’re not really mine. Not permanently. What right do I have to feel jealous or angry?”

“But you have every right,” I pleaded with him. “If you think we’re together.”

The emotions shifted in his eyes as he struggled with his answer. “Maybe I tried to pretend at first. That you could mean nothing. But I couldn’t. I care about you, Sarina. And in another time or place, I could see myself wanting so much more with you. But the more we feel, the harder it ends.”

“You don’t think I know that?” I whispered. “I know you will hurt me. Eventually.”

“But I don’t want to hurt you. So I have to ask you this. Do you want to stop now before this gets more serious? Before it hurts more?”

“No,” I gushed. I didn’t even hesitate. The idea of him pulling away sent a panic through me. I didn’t care about the heartbreak that would come later when he left me. I needed him in my life right now. “I don’t want to stop seeing you.”

On the DL by Laramie Briscoe (The MVP Duet #1)

On the DL (The MVP Duet Book 1) by [Briscoe, Laramie]4 Stars

On the DL is the first book in Laramie Briscoe’s new duet, The MVP Duet. It releases today and ends on a cliffhanger, but fortunately the second book, MVP, releases in just two weeks. I haven’t seen a release done like this before, and I really like it. So often I read a book and then have to wait a year or longer to find out what happens next. When that happens I always forget some of the important details from the last book, and it takes a while before I get back in the rhythm of the book. I’m so grateful that I won’t have that problem with this one.

High school sweethearts? Second chance romance? Professional sports romance? This book checks off so many of my favorite plots in romances that I think it was almost impossible for me not to swoon while reading it. And Slater was just so gosh darn sweet. I can’t wait to see what happens next for Malone and Slater.

I received an advance reader copy of this book that I have chosen to review.

A
second-chance romance as scorching hot as a baseball diamond in August.
Slater “Savage” Harlow

Winning the MVP award for the Birmingham Bandits last year was the highlight of
my baseball career. It was the culmination of childhood dreams, calculated
adult decisions, sacrifice, and a hell of a lot of focus. Tearing my ACL in
spring training? Not what I expected at all.

Now I’m home, in small town Georgia, rehabbing in the comfort of my own home,
with people I know. I’m connecting with friends I haven’t had time to talk to
in years, spending days at home with my parents, and getting to watch my little
brother play minor league baseball.

What I don’t expect is to see Malone Fulcher walking into Del’s Diner one
morning while having my coffee and egg whites.

She’s old flame, the one who got away, and the woman I compare all others to.

Malone Fulcher

Spending the summer in my hometown wasn’t what I had planned, but it’s what I
need. Recovering from a hard year, both personally and professionally, I need
to reconnect with who I am. When my mom encouraged me to come home and do some
soul searching, I can’t say no.

Memories are all over this small town, from the Baptist Church to the east
field on my parents farm, to the diner. On my second day in town, I decide to
go in, memories be damned.

I lost my breath as soon as I saw “Savage” Harlow sitting alone at a
booth. Our eyes lock, my heart flutters, and my hands shake – all the same way
they did back in high school. But back then we couldn’t make it work. Going our
separate ways to differing colleges, we decided we weren’t meant to be.

A decade later, as soon as our eyes meet, I’m wondering if we were right,
because those green eyes of his do nothing but take me to a past that I can see
being my future.

Author’s Note: This does end in somewhat of a cliffhanger!

Murder Girl by Lisa Renee Jones (Lilah Love #2)

5 Stars

I LOVED this 2nd installment in the Lilah Love series. Lilah + Kane are my favorite EVER and I could read about them for a hundred more books. She’s in the FBI. He’s a criminal AT BEST, and likely the head of a violent cartel. Their relationship is unlikely, but the fire is there.

I devoured this book in what is considered record time for me lately. I haven’t been using my kindle much, but I absolutely flew through this one in no time. Have I mentioned how much I love Kane?

I think this slight change in genre is good for LRJ. I love her romances, but this Lilah Love series is a real sparkler. She’ll definitely add a whole new group of fans to her base with this one because it has enough romance to keep her romance readers involved, but with the mystery side of it being so intriguing, I think she’ll add a ton of people that prefer mystery over romance.

Title: Murder Girl
Author: Lisa Renee Jones
Release Date: July 10, 2018
Series: Lilah Love #2
New York Times bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones returns with the second book in her electrifying series featuring Lilah Love, an FBI profiler who doesn’t fight her dark side—she embraces it.
It’s Lilah Love’s job to inhabit a killer’s mind. The unapologetically tough FBI profiler is very comfortable there. But her latest case is making her head spin. It’s a string of brutal assassinations carried out across the country, each tied to a mysterious tattoo. Body by body, she’s followed the clues all the way back to her hometown. And every step of the way, the killer has been following her.
Here, beneath the glamour of the privileged Hamptons community, is a secret long buried but never forgotten. It’s bigger than Lilah. It’s powerful enough to escape the reach of the FBI. And it’s more personal than anyone can imagine. Because it’s hiding in Lilah’s own past. To fight it, she’s forced to turn to her lethally tempting ex, Kane Mendez. He’s an expert at bringing out Lilah’s darkest impulses. If she plans to survive, she’s going to need them.**You MUST read book one, MURDER NOTES, prior to reading this book.

I enter the building and ignore the pretty brunette behind the triangle-shaped stone desk and head to the stairs.
“Excuse me,” she calls out, but I ignore her. Kane knows I’m coming. He has people watching me and this building. He knows I’m in the building by now. I don’t need “sweet thing” down there to announce me in yet another way. I’m at the top of the stairs before she finishes her fourth excuse me, which is now a bit louder, as if I just haven’t heard her the other three times. I turn down the hallway and walk toward the desk outside Kane’s office where Tabitha sits, minus any more originality today than the last time I was here. She’s still bleached blonde, with her fake, giant-ass boobs hanging out of a silk blouse with numerous buttons undone that turn it into a slut show that could have been professional.
I pass her without a word, approaching Kane’s double doors, when she says, “Drama follows you, Lilah Love.”
“No,” I say without looking at her. “Dead bodies follow me.” I glance over my shoulder at her. “You should remember that.”
And with that statement that really had no purpose other than it felt really damn good, I open Kane’s door.
I step inside Kane’s office and find him sitting behind his desk, just in time to hear him say, “She’s here,” into his intercom and then release the button.
With exaggerated drama that I reserve for moments when I want to be a smart-ass or simply announce my fucking presence, I use my body to shut the door, but I don’t hang out and wait for it to grow roots. I rotate and charge toward Kane and that King Mendez desk of his that he doesn’t get to use as shelter. By the time I round the wooden atrocity, he’s standing, towering over me in a charcoal suit and a purple shirt with black stripes and some sort of black-and-gray tie. It’s flashy, expensive, and works on him when it would not on nine out of ten other people. But then, while I keep a low profile—aside from the door drama, of course—and favor my black nondescript looks, his entire persona says “look at me” with the intended message of “I have nothing to hide.” A lie he tells the world and, after he drugged me to keep me from knowing what happened last night, apparently me.
We stand there for a beat or ten without words before he says, “Lilah,” and the very fact that he says it like sex is all it takes for me to snap.
I slap him in the face, because my bare fist is too small to hurt him the way his jaw would hurt me. It’s also a disgrace to a man to be slapped, which is why one UFC fighter I’ve watched here and there does it to his opponents. And Kane is my opponent. He turns his head with the force of the blow, my palm stinging in the aftermath.
“Well now, beautiful,” he says, fixing me with a brown-eyed stare. “I know you like it rough, but is now the time? We both have questions we want answered.”
I slap him again, and this time he catches my wrist before I pull back. I try to slap him with my free hand, and he catches it as well, this time before contact. “You get two, not three.”
My gaze flicks to the handprint on his right cheek that matches the one on the left before I meet his stare and say, “Two was pretty damn satisfying.”
“Why didn’t you tell me about your stalker?” he demands, his question low, lethal, his anger banked just beneath the surface, while mine is the cherry on top of every lie he’s told me. “Because we both know that’s what we’re dealing with here,” he adds.
“Let go of me, Kane,” I bite out, my voice taut with impatience. No. Make that a desire to smack him again.
“After you tell me about your stalker and the notes.”
“Let go of me, Kane,” I repeat slowly, “or my next move will be a knee to your family jewels. And I promise you, it will be hard enough that neither of us will have to worry about our urge to fuck ever again.” My jaw sets hard, but he doesn’t release me. “You drugged me,” I remind him, “and then searched my house before leaving me with a gun that I was too drugged to use. So if you think I won’t do it—”
He releases me but doesn’t step back. “I didn’t leave you with a gun you couldn’t use. I kept you at my house until sunrise, and I left a team guarding your place, front and back. I protected you, like I always do.”
I don’t analyze why that makes me angrier. That’s for later. For now, there is this: “I’d pull my gun on you and back you off, Kane, but I swore the next time I did that, I’d shoot you. And I need information from you.”
“I’m all yours, beautiful,” he says, holding his hands out. “I always am.” He motions to the sitting area to his left and behind him. “Let’s sit and make this peaceful.”
“Peaceful, my ass,” I say.

Beautiful Deep by Jordyn White (Beautiful Rivers #4)

Beautiful Deep (Beautiful Rivers Book 4) by [White, Jordyn]4.5 Stars

It feels like it’s been forever since I was able to dive into a Beautiful Rivers book, and it made me so. incredibly. happy to finally have a new one in my hands. First of all, I need to note that Jordyn White is the author formerly known as J.L. White. The name change is such a good thing, and definitely fits her book “vibe” better.

Moving on to the book, the instant attraction Rayce feels towards Emma is perfection. It’s even better when that attraction turns into a bit of a “forbidden” romance when he finds out that she is actually an employee of the resort. Emma is trying not the make the same mistake twice, but Rayce is undeniable.

I’m a little sad that this was the last book in this series. I’ve grown to love this family and this final glimpse into their lives didn’t feel like nearly enough. Each of these books is a complete standalone, so you could start with Beautiful Deep if you wanted to… but if you start at the beginning with Beautiful Mine, then your patience will be rewarded with a well-rounded series. I for one, can’t wait to to see what Jordyn White writes next.

Title: Dirty Rich Cinderella Story

Author: Lisa Renee Jones
Release Date: May 23, 2018
A new sexy standalone from Lisa Renee Jones…
SEDUCED FOR A NIGHT. TAKEN FOREVER.
With only nine months left at Stanford, and despite being top of her law school class, Lori Havens takes leave to care for her sick mother. That means she juggles three jobs, the best of which is researcher for novelist, and syndicated columnist of “Cat Does Crime,” Cat Summer.
One evening after finishing up her work at Cat’s apartment building, Lori has an encounter with a sexy stranger, and does something out of character. She goes home with him. The night is perfect, he’s perfect, wealthy, powerful and from out of town. Morning comes, and despite their connection, Lori leaves before he finds out she’s far from the equal he believes her to be. She’s not a charity case and she’s not after his money. She will make her own. In other words, she leaves before her prince charming finds out she’s no princess.
Flash forward a few months, Lori’s mother is healing, and Cat’s husband, Reese, has merged his firm with another and Lori lands an internship there, with school credit and scholarship money.. Everything is falling into place. That is until fate reveals a wicked twist of events and Lori walks into a conference room to find her new boss, Cole Brooks, one of the partners, is her one-night prince charming. One sizzling shared look across a boardroom, and it’s clear: this man is not done with her. It’s not long before Lori is informed that she’ll be working high profile cases with her one night prince charming which will require long nights and travel, starting immediately.

I own you.

With those words, my words, my intent in the air, and my fingers still tangled in Lori’s hair, I kiss her, a deep, possessive kiss meant to claim her, take her, make her mine, if only for this night. And she knows it too, because when my lips part hers, she pants out, “No one owns me.”
“Then, sweetheart, you’ve never been properly fucked.” I slide my hands under her jacket, settling my palms on her shoulders.
“I guess that depends on how you define properly.”
I turn her to face in the opposite direction, dragging the jacket down her arms and tangling it around her wrists, and then I lean in close. “As dirty as possible,” I promise. “And with you on my tongue, in as many ways as we both find possible.”
“Is this how you own me?” she demands. “By binding my arms?”
“As much as I’d like to have you at my mercy, sweetheart,” I say, tossing the jacket aside, and turning her to face me, “I’m selfish enough to want your hands and mouth fully available, in any way, shape, or place you so choose to use them.” I walk us backward, toward the oversized chair made perfectly for the kind of hot, wild fuck in our near future, before my hands fall from her waist. “I want to watch you undress.”
“When do you undress?” she challenges.
“We have one condom, sweetheart. Let’s make it last. Undress for me, Lori.”
Her teeth scrape her bottom lip, and for just a moment, her eyes cut, but not before I see the flicker of nerves in her stare. And right then, I know that I’ve read her accurately up to this point. I know that her control is both a necessity and a wall that protects her. I know that no one has made it safe for her to leave those things at the door. No one has ever seen her really truly naked and the only way that happens, is to do exactly what I’m doing. Push her out of her comfort zone, pull her into the moment, where she forgets the walls, and lives nowhere but here in the moment. That’s the place where nothing exists but the two of us.
Her eyes meet mine again, and I see the decision in them. She’s not going to run like she did on the street tonight. She unzips her skirt, and caresses it down her slender, but curvy hips. It pools at her feet, and she kicks it aside, allowing me to admire her long legs in lacy thigh-high hose, my gaze catching on the slender strip of lace in the vee of her body.
Her fingers catch on the hem of her blouse, and she tries to hide the small, inhaled breath of courage she draws before pulling it and her loose bra over her head. She tosses it, and stands before me, creamy pale perfection in nothing but silk and lace, her breasts high, full, nipples puckered to a pretty pink that will soon be in my mouth. “You’re beautiful,” I say. “Come here.”
“Quid pro quo,” she declares. “I’m naked, you’re naked.”
We’re still doing the push and pull, but I don’t mind, not when my mouth is soon to be all over her body, which means her mouth will soon be all over my body. I don’t want her kneeling before me unless it’s to put her mouth on my cock. That’s not my goal, not this time, at least. It’s to own her, and that means she is so damn present, she can’t think, she can only feel. That takes trust and I decide to meet her halfway. I sit down and take off a shoe, showing it to her before setting it down.
“So now I get a socked foot?” she teases, and I can feel a hint of her tension easing away, her comfort in her own skin begins to settle into place. I can feel her easing into me and the night, letting me glimpse the real woman, not the stranger.
And I find that I surprise myself by how much I want to know this woman, not just fuck her.
“The pants don’t come off with the shoes on,” I tell her, and by the time I’ve removed the second shoe, she’s standing in front of me, every creamy white, naked inch of her. She grabs it and tosses it.
“Now the pants,” she orders, making it clear that she’s no submissive, that she can hold her own, and I fucking love it. “Or the shirt.”
I reach for her hips and walk her between my legs. “You’ve distracted me,” I tell her, my lips brushing her belly, my tongue drawing a circle. She trembles beneath my mouth, and I glance up at her. “You’re owned when you can think of nothing but the person you’re with. Nothing but what they might do to you now, and in the next moment.” I twine the string at her hips in my fingers. “Or where they might lick, kiss, or touch.” I drag her panties down her legs and then lower my mouth to her sex, where I let my breath tease her. “Tell me to lick you,” I order.
Her fingers curl around the material over my shoulders. “No.”
I bite my bottom lip and shake my head. “That’s too bad, because I really wanted to know how you taste.” I nip her hip and when she gives a surprised yelp I lave the wound with my tongue, glancing up at her. “Do you want me to—?”
“Yes.”
