The Silent Corner by Dean Koontz (Jane Hawk #1)

4 Stars

My first Dean Koontz was a success! I’ve always been curious about his writing, but believed he would be too scary. I’m not a horror reader, and I have no desire to be. But I couldn’t help but want to see why he was such a popular author. I ran across The Silent Corner on NetGalley and the blurb sounded interesting without being too scary.

It was good!

The book itself was much longer than I expected, but I was thoroughly entertained. The mystery within is creepy without being scary and Jane Hawk is pretty much my hero. I did find it a bit too descriptive for my taste in a few places but I still had a hard time putting it down. I will be definitely be picking up The Whispering Room when it comes out in January.

Balance by Lucia Franco (Off Balance #1)

 5 Stars!

Balance by Lucia Franco is the first book in the Off Balance trilogy. I picked it up on Kindle Unlimited after seeing someone rave about it on Instagram. She was completely right about it. This book is intense, sexy, and TABOO. The next book, Execution, doesn’t even have a release date yet but I am in line for it.

There are some definite warnings that need to go with this book. You have to be able to deal with:

  • Forbidden Romance – Adrianna is a 15 year old gymnast, and Kova is her 32 year old coach.
  • An Affair – Kova is cheating on his girlfriend of 5 years with Adrianna.
  • Kova is a dick — ok, so that one isn’t really a TABOO thing, but he IS a dick.

Balance is currently on sale for $.99 or FREE with Kindle Unlimited.

Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean’s Most Fearless Scientist by Jess Keating

 5 Stars

I don’t usually review picture books, but I knew Shark Lady was the perfect book for my family. My oldest son is 7 and mostly reads nonfiction with a heavy emphasis on sharks. His goal is to write a book about sharks and asked for a typewriter last Christmas so that he could start writing his book.

This book is everything we were looking for. Eugenie Clark lived such an inspirational life. What she achieved as a female scientist is incredible considering the mindset regarding women in the workplace at the time. My son appreciated this book more for the “shark scientist” angle and the fact that she lived the life he dreams of. I loved this book for the female empowerment. Eugenie Clark knew what she wanted from life and she didn’t let the restrictions of society restrict what she wanted to achieve. Shark Lady gave me a glimpse of a woman that I can’t wait to know more about. This book is a real gem and I’m glad we found it. We ordered a copy for our bookshelf and can’t wait to see it in its final form.

Tank by Laramie Briscoe (Moonshine Task Force #2)

 3.5 Stars

I really wanted to be blown away by this second installment of the Moonshine Task Force. The relationship between Blaze and Tank was teased throughout Renegade, and I was SO EXCITED for it. Blaze especially, sounded like my kind of girl. It didn’t quite live up to my expectations, but I was engaged enough that I still want to find out what happens in the “Strather” storyline.

I’m not a huge fan of angst, and part of why I like Laramie Briscoe is that her books aren’t about that. You don’t feel like something was added to the story just to cause problems. The relationships feel like they progress naturally, and without stupidity.

The next book, Havoc, has also been teased since Renegade. The dynamic of Havoc & Leighton sounds adorable, and I’m excited to see how their romance plays out. I’m sure we’ll get a lot more detail on the “Strather” storyline, and I’m ready to find out more about that.

Title: Tank
Series: Moonshine Task Force #2
Author: Laramie Briscoe
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: June 2, 2017
Blurb
Life isn’t promised, love isn’t easy, and relationships
aren’t always clean, but everyone has their soulmate who is willing to forgive
when it would be better to forget.
Trevor “Tank”
Trumbolt
I never thought in the blink of an eye my life could change,
but it did. Cresting a hill driving to my favorite fishing spot, I was hit
head-on by a teenager with no regard for anyone’s life but his own.
The recovery process has been hard, painful, and damn near
beating me down.

The bright spot? Blaze.
Surviving the wreck has given me a second chance to make a
life with her. Not knowing if I’ll ever be able to rejoin the Moonshine Task
Force again has brought my world into focus. It’s made me realize what’s
important.
Blaze. Stella. My brothers. My sister.
The ego that ran Blaze away before isn’t here any longer.
What’s left is a man who’s holding his heart in his hands and a burning hope
that once I’m healed she’ll still be around.
Daphne “Blaze”
Coleman
There’s only been one person in the world who’s accepted me
for who I am – from the fiery red of my hair and vibrant tattoos covering parts
of my body to the smartness of my mouth and my desire to be matched in the
bedroom.
That man is Trevor Trumbolt. When he asked me to give up my
job as an EMT because he saw the dangers I face one scary afternoon, it spelled
the end for us.
Now that he’s been injured, he needs my help and my love.
I’ll give it all freely, but in the end I’m gonna need him to understand one
thing about relationships. The give and take, love and sadness, pleasure and
pain is a two-way street. He’s either in this with me or he’s not, but at the
end of the day, I won’t let him boss me around.
If there’s anything that can handle the steel of a tank –
it’s the heat of a blaze.

Love My Way by Kate Sterritt

5 Stars

THE TEARS! I wasn’t expecting a sobfest when I picked this book up. I picked it because the cover was so pretty. I think it is quite possibly one of my favorite covers EVER. I expected wanderlust with a bit of a love triangle. Despite the blurb, I expected a pretty light read.

This book devastated me. I spent the morning reading. I couldn’t put it down, and then when the tears started they were unexpected. They kept coming and before long I was a blubbering mess. I don’t enjoy crying. In fact, I can say with conviction that I absolutely hate crying. Despite this, this won’t be my last Kate Sterritt book. She was unexpected, but in the best way possible. I expected and wanted a light read, but instead I got my heart turned inside out. I still can’t believe she was able to wring that much emotion out of me that quickly. I am impressed.

Royal Bastards by Andrew Shvarts

 4 Stars

I never expected to love Royal Bastards like I do.

This is one of those books that you can’t even talk about because everything you want to say is a spoiler. I will say there were way more twists than I expected and most of them were not pleasant. There is some romance, but it is definitely not the meat of this story. This is the 1st book in a planned trilogy, and I already know I will read every. single. one. I am in.

The beginning of this book reads more like MG and the vocabulary is oddly modern for the type of historical fantasy I was expecting. When I started I thought it would end up being a light fantasy like My Lady Jane. It definitely takes a darker turn though and sets itself firmly on the YA shelf. It is political, violent and magical with a definite world that is solidly set. I hope the physical book gets a world map, and I can’t wait to see the fan art for these characters (and creatures).

Lethal Lies by Rebecca Zanetti (Blood Brothers #2)

4 Stars

Every time I read a new book from Rebecca Zanetti I am reminded of why I love her writing. She pairs lethal, alpha males with smart, spirited females. Each couple gets a happily ever after, but the books within the series still tie together with a complete story arc.  I wasn’t disappointed with Lethal Lies. In fact, I was about midway through the story when I realized I was going to be unexpectedly busy and wouldn’t have time to actually hold the book and read it. I needed to know what was going to happen next and didn’t want to wait until I had time to sit down and read, so I hopped over to Audible and picked up the audio of this book as well. It was so worth it.

While reading Deadly Silence, I had expected Special Agent Loretta Jackson to be Heath’s love interest. She made regular appearances throughout the book, and than at the end was abducted by the Copper Killer. Lethal Lies starts right where the last book left off, but Loretta isn’t Heath’s match, it’s Anya. It took me longer to warm up to this couple than usual, but I think that is more because of my *couple prediction* than the chemistry. Once I got past that, I was sucked back into this plot.

I CANNOT wait for Denver and Noni’s book. This couple has intrigued me from the beginning and I’m so happy that it will finally be their turn. I’m also ready for the guys to put an end to the evil scientist lady, so hopefully that will wrap up in the next one as well.

LETHAL LIES EXCERPT

She swallowed and met his gaze. “All right. Let me get this straight. We’re going undercover to flush out a killer who’s obsessed with me, and you’re offering to play at being my man for real with no strings or future?” She hoisted the bag onto her shoulder. “That’s some ego. Are you that good in bed?”

“Yes.” And that was definite interest in her eyes.

She clicked her tongue. “I’ll keep your offer in mind.”

“You do that.” He maintained a low and calm voice. “While you’re considering, let’s look at the situation. You have publicly made me your fiancé in order to draw out a killer, which means I have to act as such. Any halfway intelligent law enforcement officer or private investigator would keep his redheaded fiancée very close after the stunt you just pulled. If you’re not with me, the killer is going to be very suspicious.”

She stilled, expressions crossing her face rapidly. “That’s a good point,” she said slowly.

Yeah. Sometimes reality helped him out a little. Plus, the killer had a hard-on for her, and he must already have plans to take her at some point. She’d just upped the timeline. “In addition, you need protection around the clock now, and I’m willing to provide that. So while you’re keeping my offer in mind, we’ll be staying in the same hotel room or same apartment.” He made sure he had her full attention. “While we plan the wedding, of course.”

Her challenging smile thrilled something inside him. “That’s fair.”

He stepped back to give her some space. “Good. Are you ready?”

“Yes.” She looked around the room. “I do have to ask. What if I didn’t agree with you about your keeping secrets from me? Considering people shoot at you, and I’m going to be at your side, it seems fair that you tell me who these people are.” She cocked her head to the side and focused back on him.

“I have more immediate concerns than being fair,” he said smoothly. “You brought me into this mess.”

A frown drew down her eyebrows. “Listen. I want an answer about you.”

“I just gave you one.” At her mulish expression, he searched for better words that wouldn’t end in an argument.

Suddenly, the door blew wide open and bounced loudly off the table. “Anya!” he yelled, jumping for her.
